how do you program those out of sync beats like jaydee

Well, the 4k has 960ppq, which is 10x finer than other mp's 96ppq. On my 3k, with quantize off, the step edit still shows all events in 1 tick increments. Isnt there a setting to skip to the next event, not next note? Other than timing, there are still other factors to making drums sound 'real' tho.

Sometimes you want that ultra-tight quantized sound and sometimes you want it to swing to a specific sample. Usually I'll try and get it with 16th triplets on double time on the kicks and snare at least and then adjust the hats with swing settings. If that dont get it, then i just do it manually until I get it. I think alot of people use MPC's in the first place because they are not drummers and can't keep a rock solid beat for long with out drifting, etc. If I was a bad ass drummer, I probably would sell this joint and get a decent drum kit and some mics.

I believe a large number of MPC users have no grasp of music theory, which means that they are not familiar with note values. The MPC swing function alone will NOT (I repeat, NOT) have any effect on the downbeat of your kick, snare, hihat, cowbell, etc. It will ONLY effect the sound that lands on an upbeat, regardless of percentage (50 through 75).

But won't that be permanent? I might not want them to be layered the same way on my next beat.

That is only true if you assume that the drums have already been quantized (to a 'straight' aka 'no swing' aka swing@50%' grid). If you played the drums 'live', turning QUANTIZE on (which you need to do before you can use SWING) WILL move ALL hits into the grid. So unless you played them EXACTLY on the beat to begin with, the downbeats will be moved too.
