That sounds like a LCD voltage supply. Is there a step up transformer apart from the mains? That is a common design.

do lcds need higher voltage then? i didn't think so.
stereoroid suggested that the higher voltage is for the backlight, but i believe that the backlight is LEDs, or am i wrong?

yeah i know that, but the backlight is what i'm talking about, on the early mpcs, it was an electro luminescent sheet that shone through the LCD, and i'm pretty sure that the 1k has LEDs which shine through (rather than cold cathode tubes, like in LCD TVs or computer monitors.

Be careful with what u guys are trying to do unless you know a bit about electronics. Some of the info I have seen in this thread so far sounds a bit dodgy. I'm not talkin crap or talkin down to people but be careful. I'll give u guys a few tips.

Power Cord 110/240v AC------>(AC) MPC power supply (DC)-----> MPC motherboard

The power comes in through the power cord. Goes into the MPC power supply as AC (Alternating Current). Gets converted into DC (Direct current) and feeds into the MPC itself.

You need to measure the voltages at the other end of the MPC power supply where it feeds into the motherboard. Find out what ones you need. Probably 12v and 5v. Then you need a laptop battery and some kind of voltage regulator (keeps voltage steady) and place that where the MPC power supply is. So the flow is:

(DC) Battery ----> Voltage Regulator (DC) -----> MPC motherboard

Maybe you can salvage some kind of voltage regulator board from a laptop or something. It would be a hassle to build one yourself.

did you not read my 'dirty' method? i said use a pc power supply! these have voltage regulators built in. thanks for the input tho! :D

Right, I slipped. When I mentioned LCD, I meant "display assembly", whatever the MPC is using.

Did anyone check or know if the 50v comes directly off the power supply board or if there is a separate transformer for it? Is the 50v for the display assembly? This could be a mod killer.

even if it is, i'll just convert it to LED backlighting.

If it's drawing that much current at 50V, any battery supply isn't gonna last too long...probably not gonna be worth the trouble.

that's true, but i wonder why they advertise the mpc as 19W on their website, when 50V x 2.3A = 115W, strange. maybe it's just startup current, like an electric motor? anyone know?

While stereoroid is right that it says that, but it not what one thinks. Yep, I opened my MPC. Repairmen do not need warranties. It looks that it is a fuse rating, possibly SF1 right next to it? It certainly has nothing to do with a power supply. Anyway, I checked the power supply output: +12V, -12V, 5V GND. Pretty common.

Although I am really glad Akai Pro used an internal power supply. Walwarts drive me nuts (That means you Korg and Roland!).
