sup fellas.  I'm planning on purchasing a turntable within a few weeks  [so as to sample into my MPC 2000XL] and am not quite sure about the necessity of a pre-amp.  I read different posts on the forum and cannot figure out whether or not I need a "Pre-amp" or a "mixer".  With this TT I primarily intend to sample off vinyl into my MPC and may do a little scratching down the line, to get that classic hip hop feel.  Would that require a pre-amp or mixer, or both?    What exactly is the function of a preamp?  I know there's alot of you dj's out there so if anyone can help it would be appreciated.  Peace

a phono-amp (or pre-amp)boosts the phono signal to line level. You need this because the sound from a turntable is not loud enough by  itself.
But almost all dj-mixers have a phono amp build in. If you want to do any scratchin later on, you're gonna need a mixer anyway.
So there you go, you DON'T need a mixer and a pre-amp. Start looking for a mixer that fits your budget and needs.[/color]

stanton makes good entry level mixers altho I own several dj mixers (been djing FOR A LONG TIME now i just realized) I gots a rane, a couple of vestax's and some 'experiment" mixers I rewire for cool stuff like distortion and stuff, I must say 99.99% of the time I sample and scratch out of my Vestax PMC 06, I know the rANE TTM SERIES has better spec's but I realy cannot tell a major difference and I love the feel of the vestax 06, its slim and its real easy to juggle and crab on it, and thats that for me, its like 200 bucks new Waaaaaay less then the 400 I paid back in 98 or 99.[/color]
