Redbook Format?

Been meaning to ask for a while, but does anyone know what Redbook format is exactly? I know the basic idea behind it is that a disc is burned at once, but is that all it is? What I'm basically trying to ask is whether you need a program which specifically burns something in Redbook format, or whether you can just burn out of a normal program using the same parameters?
