I haven't used an MPC before, so I wanted to get some things straight about the MPC 1000. Up until now I've only used cheaper hardward samplers and software samplers.

I read on mpc-tutor that the MPC 1000 lacks the "reverse sample" feature. Does this mean I can't play a sample backwards without sending it to my computer and reversing it manually?

I also have a couple of other questions. I read there are 10 onboard effects that the 2 effects processors (and main output effects) have, what are they? Specifically, I read that there is no delay effect? For me delay is the most usefull effect to have onboard, because I often build a beat around a sample with a delay on it. (On akaipro.com they have some beats that Def Jef made with the 1000 and he seems to have delay on his samples, so I'm hoping this isn't true. For me many other effects, reverbs and such, can be added in the mixdown process, but delay is often more essential during creation.

Lastly, I read somewhere that the MPC 1000 does not have the timestretch feature. Is this true? I didn't see this missing in the MPC Tutor comparison.

You can not reverse a sample or timestretch on the mpc1000. The effects are chrous, flanger, bit grunger. 4 band eq, compressor, phaseshifter, tremolo, flying pan, reverb.

Hope that helped you out a lil.

Thanks that did help. It makes me not want the 1000. Has me thinking I should just go for the 2000XL.

i think the 1000 sounds a lil better though. You should go try one for yourself at a local guitar center or something. Just try them both and see which one you like. Its not that hard to go back and forth for reverse samples or timestretching.

if you cannot see the difference between 2kXl and the new Mpc 1000, then you may as well wear a blinding scarf.

the 1000 is much much better....
trust me

the features that you are after are not even the worthy of using the 1000's power.

reverse...lol...come on!!!
timestretch...software can do this...and far better.
and the delay effect...well most softwae apps have this.

the 1000 has been purely designed as a dedicated drum machine for a modern DAW user, i.e. someone who has logic or pro tools, lots of outboard, etc.

I can't see how heads can say the 1000 is definitely better. I own a 1000 and not a 2K but there are some things I'm not particularly feeling:

1. Only 2 dedicated efx at any one time with no resampling. Every sample in your program is forced to use the efx you set globally for all samples within the program. - How do you get around this?

2. Not being able to assign a sample to a keyboard and then play an octave of the sample pitch shifted. Can't you do this on the 2000?

3. The filters are pretty weak.

Things I am feeling:
1. Portability
2. The real-time editing, being able to switch modes while the song is playing
3. USB drag n' drop

You can sample the stereo out of the sound you put the effects to by just hit the pad in record mode.

Hitting the pad during record mode will record midi data, not an actual soundfile. Please reexplain cuz right now it seems like you're just telling me to apply an effect and then use the sample within a sequence. Are you saying we need to go into actual external sampling mode?

in record mode, select your input from 'analog' to 'main out' and then you can resample any sound(not midi) coming out of the stereo outs.

Cool. Do i need to plug the main outs back into the inputs or does it resample internally?

Also, do you guys know if I can hook up a keyboard, map a particular sample across the keys, and then record the midi data and have the mpc play back my melody?

plug the main outs into the inputs

By macman Tue Dec 30, 2003 10:24 am
U don't need to do that!!!

When your in Sample Rec mode on the top left of the screen you need to change the input rec to Main Stereo outs.

U will not see a level on the meters all you need to do is hit record and then the pad you wanna resample.

Now go and assign the sample

Hope this helps

to #1. yea, i did notice this myself with the efx, I was thinking it was me.
anyone know if there is a way around this? On my 2k i could use any of the efx at one time on ONE sample, the last few times I tried this it effected all the samples.

#2. the only MPC that can do this is the 4000.
