MBOX2 Compatibility

I just got MBOX2 with a HP, AMD Athlon 64, 3400+ processor, 1gb memory.

Pro Tools is not compatible with this computer, I wont give you the rest of the details, caus i've tried everything from updating firmware and drivers, to sending error reports, and restoring the computer numerous times.

I'm returning the computer, and would like someone that has MBOX2 with pro tools le 6.8.1 working fine on it to please tell me what computer you have and your setup. Thanx for da help.

Forget about using 6.8.1 Get PT LE7. Try these steps before you return the computer. You might still be alright. I had a similar problem but its working sweet now.

Register your mbox2 (the hardware), you will get an email with link to PT LE7 . Then download pro-tools LE7. (its a free upgrade and worth it!)

I have:

Asus A8V-E motherboard
Athlon 3400+
1 GB ram
Nvidia 6600 GFX card

1. Make sure you have winxp sp2 installed.

2. Remove any previous Pro-Tools installation. Pro-Tools shouldn't show up in the Add/Remove section of winxp. If you have troubles removing it then refer to this answerbase article. http://answerbase.digidesign.com/detail.cfm?DID=28596

3. Install Pro-Tools 7. You should be good to go. Once you get it going its a nice system. I leave it on 128 samples all the time. No crashes at all.

I checked the chipset and its not compatible. I also have a AMD but i just bought it like a week ago so exchanging should be fine.

I would like to know where all of those people that said in various threads that protools le just works with every system right out the box?

I admit I've never seen a program so particular about the system before. My RME interface and drivers were much easier to get working. But once you get it working it works nice.

Go to DUC and post your computer specs/ potential specs there. They will give you a yes or no. There is a thread with recommended motherboard/chipsets. There is also a thread with recommended setup/tweaks for winxp. Go through those and that should give you a good idea on what to buy/how to setup.

I gave you mine...it works for me but I have setup my computer to work well with pro-tools. Read docs on setup/ what version of windows to install etc and then try it out.

Chuck the computer and get a powerbook... you'll love yourself for it.

do not get a powerbook the g4 processor is almost 6 years old, and it is the reason that apple has partnered with intel. it will work with protools le, but u won't have the horsepower to run a lot of instruments and fx. protools is really meant to run with dsp and the native processing of le is probably the most inefficient of any daw. right now is the worst time to buy a new computer especially laptop, because the new intels for both mac and pc are only a few months away, not to mention the new win 64 (vista).

I bet the new Intel computers will cost close to a new MPC 2500. The new chips are going to definitely going have major bugs. I wouldn't buy one until 2007. By that time, I'll have enough money and some bugs will be worked out. I'd find out which works best for now. If Pro Tools is giving you problems, there's also Cubase, Cakewalk, etc. There is no perfect computer.

I would of copped the MOTU Traveler instead of MBOX 2, but that was an impulse decision. I have a G4 Powerbook 1.33 GHz with 1.25gb ram, and I use Logic Pro 7. I finalize all my tracks in Pro Tools Le to send towards a mixing and mastering engineer.

the point is not to buy one of those intel macs but to get one of those 6 year old g4 laptops for cheap. just know that u will be lusting after the next generation pc's in a year

I don't think it's really relavant how old the chip is, it's the processing power and the requirements the software has for it. I run my pro tools LE on my powerbook G4 and it works just fine, without even a firewire 7200 rpm hard drive and only 512 ram.... I definitely need more ram and the external firewire hard drive soon, but it runs perfect if I dont' OD on the plug in's. The G4 that's out now has more power and a faster speed than the G4 that came out four years ago obviously...
