Guru is the G.O.D.

ok i tried guru a few months ago and wasn't impressed. i was on kvr last night and someone posted links to some videos on the fxpansion website for it. after watching them and being amazed i installed the demo on my mobile rig and this is what i have been in need of for years.

i started on a r8 back in 94 which was dope and then left drum machines all together because i am a live drummer. i then went back to electronic drums in 2000 using dsq in dynamo which was a version of reaktor. i then started to use redum in reason and have been using it ever since. last december i bought a mpc 1000, which i was excited about but i ended up using it about 6 times and hated it's intergration with my workflow. i just sold the 1000 and got a trigger finger. i have battery 2 which is dope but it lacks a step sequencer.

unfortunately i just upgraded to reason 3 and the only thing i use in reason is redrum. i as of 12/29/05 have retired reason. Guru does what redrum does and then some. people always hated on the sound of reason and i never understood it until last night when i loaded the same one shots i always use and they sounded a lot better, and i never had a problem with my mixes. So today i went to my local guitarget and copped the full version for a nice price since i always buy my software from there.

i was complaining about akai not making a virtual mpc, but little did i know fxpansion beat them to it.

ok now for devil's advocate
the timing of a pc isn't as solid and u get latency, when compared to a mpc.
well the reason why i recommend a self built system and rme conversion is because i can get down to 48 samples with my fireface which gives me 2ms latency. everything has latency even the mpc and i would imagine that it is somewhere around a few ms. u even add a few ms when u listen to music through monitors instead of headphones. Generally anything above 8ms isn't noticeable.

Guru doesn't have the swing of the mpc.
i never quantize but if u wanted to u could record a click with various percentages of swing from your mpc before u sell it and then import them into guru, and bam! u have u roger linn timing.

even if u want to keep your mpc i suggest at least trying it out. go check out the demo cause this program is a monster and the thing that really made it kill redrum is the fact it can run stand alone, vsti, and with rewire.

I been thinking about Guru or Battery 2 for my laptop to make beats at work, I got like an hour or an hour and a half of downtime at work where I do absoloutely nothing... any thoughts on one or both of those?

I've been using GURU for a couple of months . Is it cool? yeah , Is it an MPC , NO . It works pretty good but they need to work out the bugs still. If you sequence it in a DAW it repsonds weird to midi messages. You must trigger the patterns before the last note of the pattern or it wont trigger the next one on time. So in essence if there is a note being played on the last 16th you loose it in the DAW. Also the EQ and filters have no visual aid ,so its all done by ear, which is almost impossible to notch a certain feq. without seeing it. As for making step patterns , It rocks real easy to use and get your head around, unlike Battery that has a steep learning curve. Sound ? Well it sounds punchy and full but no MPC straight out of the box,But use it with VST's now your talking, a little Exciter,Eq ,and comp. Now this puppy BANGS. The great thing is it exports midi patterns. So you could write a song using patterns assign the right midi notes and export to your Mpc. I still havent tried doing this yet but if it works it could be a time saver.The FX suck in it ,they are pretty much useless besides the filters and delay ,I would rather use VST. It does tend to crash a lot as a stand-alone app, But rewired or used as a VST it is solid. If the next update addresses the pattern error and includes a sequencer it will be GOD until then my Mpc is still tighter . Oh yeah as far as layering sounds it is awsome for making sounds to export or resample into the Mpc.It works nice for finding the BPM of a sample because you have the visual of the step sequencer so you can see when it hits on the one perfect. The supplied SoundBank is Tight real tight a few GIGS of sounds almost all drum sounds included is JOMOX ,Roland, 8bit, all sorts of iissh you would use, Its the best sound bank of any drummachine I ever came across.Is it worth the cash ? Sure, Is it perfect? No. Will it be God ? We will soon find out on the next update.

u right guru is no mpc and that is what is good about it. the only mpc i really messed with is the 1000 and it is no match for guru. After using it for almost a week i do see some of the bugs, but none of them r show stoppers. the fxpansion guy said that there will be 2 more updates which will include a 1.5 until we see a 2.0.
