mate that is my exact situation as well. room is pretty cold. and it only feels warm, usually when something overheats if feels too hot, but my mpc aint that hot. im wondering if on both our mpc's something is not being cooled down properly.

it's funny coz after using it for like 4 months since I got it I didn't have any problems. Now when I'm using it for longer sessions it gets messed up. And the strangest part is that the MP smells like burning plastic even if I'm not using it. It just smells like it's fresh out of factory or something.

P.S. I have Kingston ram installed so there is no connection with memory.

i had kingston ram installed, so i dunno wat to think. i no longer hav the ram in, and im positive something else is messing up. it seems to happen more frequently which is worrying me quite a bit. and if i open the compartment after this happens, i also get that smell

it happened just once to me (the CPU Address Error) but I ussualy keep my MP off when I'm not using it. Some people say that they leave theirs on for days, so I don't know what to think. I'll leave mine on for couple hours today and let u know what happens.

From what you're saying it sounds like an overheating issue and it could be dust causing the problem - try removing the case and giving the components a blast with compressed air.
hope this helps.

where can u buy compressed air and how much. plus is it dodgy opening up the rest of the casing

By mmj Mon Jan 02, 2006 9:38 pm
air: http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html/10 ... de=3346321

If you're in the uk try Maplins

If you're uncertain about opening the casing, then you're best returning it to the shop, to look at it for free if its under warranty or (if its out of warranty)charge a minimal amount for opening it and blasting it with air.

heres someone who's opened one up: http://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php ... talling+hd

it looks like it's just the screws on the bottom. UNPLUG the unit  , put it upside down on a folded towel and have a clean empty cup nearby to put the screws in

i would def. try what mmj suggested.
It aint that bad opening your mpc, ive done it a couple of times, just make sure you take your time, think things through, and put the right screws back in the holes they came from... but to be honest, i aint no electrician, and for me its a no-brainer......
good luck

yeh will do. akai technical support was, surprise surprise, useless, and basically if i want it serviced its gonna cost and take a lot of time. my only real option, if the compressed air doesnt work, would b to sell it (i know its a little dark, but someone did it to me, i owuld never usually do that) and buy another one hoping that i wont ever hav the same trouble ive had with this one.

sprayed the insides with compressed air, but it didnt do a thing. still crashes. im really upset, ive worked real hard (double shifts) to buy this machine, which i can only barely afford, and it doesnt work and there aint shit i can do. just lost myself 400 pounds. :(

uhh. not really.

the mpc is enclosed, only in a device with fans etc would dust be a problem for cooling.
sounds like a problem with the mpc.

i leave mine on for hours, i use it as a headphone preamp basically, my comps digital out to my mpcs digital in, cos there aint a headphone out on my compy.

try arcing the machine up.
i have a paint roller stuck under mine, it prolly gets more air going around it and cools it down, or invest in one of those laptop coolers, with fans coming out of them, and chuck it under your mpc, odds on it'll stop the problem.

how about you make couple of tiny holes in the RAM compartment flap and have a fan installed there somehow so that the air would flow at the bottom. RAM slot is very close to the CPU from what I see on those pictures that that guy made after taking his MP apart.

P.S. Rob I left my MP on for 4 hours yesterday, surely it got kind of warm but did not crash. It seems that the most amount of heat is generated where the inputs/outputs are located on the back panel, also in the RAM area on the bottom( probably CPU thou). Hopefully it'll help to asses your problems and find a solution cause i feel you on the whole MPC crashing problem. I learned that it is not worth to worry about the machine so much bu about your music because I didn't get started with any projects until I ignored flaws and imperfections that my machine has (buttons not working properly; though replaced).

yeh but my mpc doesnt work, cant really get much music done. i mean im laying down some of my best work, but only thru frustration of it crashing every 10 mins (funny how i see to get most creative when things stop working properly)....unfortunately it has got worse, so that aint much that can be done. ive booked it on for repair cimple systems in the uk (akai tech support official service place in uk) and hopefully they'll sort it out. i had a look a the hardware, and i think i know what produces that smell. if u take the black cover off the powerr surply, theres this little box that looks kinda like a battery, with looks like it might be leaking, not sure what it is, but it pretty sure that its wat gives off the smell of burning. the thing is, none of the parts seem hot at all, which makes me thing something in the hardware is going wrong. the guy at cimple systems said they basically do tests to try and fail the hardware to see what is at fault. i just hope they can fix it.

my first posted beat, just a sketch, with me accidently knocking my turntable 2/3s of the way thro. def sketchy, but this is wat ive accomplished today amongst constant mpc crashing, hopegully once its fixed i can actually do something decent wiv it, anyways

Good to know that u gav it to service. It'll probably cost a little but hopefully they will bring your MPC back to life. Keep us posted...
