Sampling

just a quick question which im sure has been asked before but im tired and wanna go to bed so cant be arsed looking it up. What do u guys usually lift off the records u sample.For example to u take a 2 bar piano melody and add it to a beat or do u just take several notes then make ur own melody. I havn't quite got the ear yet for finding samples that will work well.

What i've been doing lately is, finding a loopable sample off a record.

Then try to bring as much elements from that record as possible, and trying to make it sound not so chaotic.... maybe tweak a guitar hit or whatever...

I think i will stick by this code.

Are the samples you take off the record clean sounds, like is it just a straight guitar riff or do they have drums etc behind them. I always find it hard to find a sample that has nothing behind it.

mostly just the obvious guitar/piano/whatever loops.
with ambient little sounds in the backround, maybe some other mess.

I've been trying to get some more knowledge of EQ/Compression, so i can try to filter out any annoying little kicks/snars that might be in the way

Filtering out kicks and snares might be hard cause they are usually hard sounding.. Maybe a multiband limiter will help slightly but you might also be slicing out certains freqs of the sample that you are trying to save and use in the first place.... Might be easier to just find a part in the sample with no kicks, snares or background noise.
