Unhappy Memories: RAM

Really I understood it as it has a max of 128MB of RAM...Oh well it was worth a try

Go figure- it's outa stock though. I'm new to the MPC scene, but is $110 alot for this memory?

well that is kinda the point of this thread. Its 2 or 3 times what you'd expect to pay for generic RAM but we don't yet know whether generic RAM will work... time will tell

Spoke to AKAI on Friday, The guy in the parts dept did admit that other RAM will work, but no others have been tested by them, He gave the same specs we all know, 144 pin, SDO RAM 128 but they didn't really know what brand or any more info. He also said that they don't even have the EXM128 in stock yet. He was thinking that they will have more info in a couple weeks.

I tryed 133 bus, and 100 with no luck. Can't imagen what they have in there. Even when I put in sticks of 128 it only finds 64, and fails on the 4th test on both bus speeds. Man Akai, make it hard why don't ya.

great soo this means not only can you use akai brand over priced ram BUT they dont even have them instock...

Ya I tried to cop some RAM for the MPC 1000 and they didn't have any in stock this month either!It's goin on 3 months now! I've been callin stores online since Sept./Oct. sometime and there still none in stock until next year Jan./Feb. hopefully but the 16 mb that's standard with the 1k is cool for now but the 128 mb RAM will be off da chain! The hold on the 128 mb RAM will give all of us enough time to find some cheaper memory for the 1k! Richard what's da deal homie have u found any memory yet playa get at cha boy OnE!

if they release a product with proprietaryram then they need to have that ram avail and instock in every music store out there! they say its not proprietary yet the akai reps cant even specify what ram IS COMPATIBLE~ grrrrrrrrrrr

So i may be a total newb to MPC's but have a vast backround in electronics hardware so may i ask, does anyone know specifically what the problem with the generic sodimm's are? Is it to do with bus speed? Or size (sodimms come in standard as well as low profile 1.5) It is also possible it is set to recogize a standard chip configuration (8X128 16X64 2-16X32 this might explain some of the failure with 64meg chips people have tried) ? Once someone has purchased the akai proprietary unit could they post the voltage/chip config/bus? Just offering some thoughts on this whole ram fiasco. I just recieved the mpc1000 and to my surprise filled up the internal memory my second time using it (even after getting rid of many of the presets) so i am hoping i dont have to spend 110 bucks to make it a more fully funtional unit (though 40 would be nice 2.2gig compactflash media available for 190 bucks online if interested pm me or leave a reply i dont want to spam advertise on your nice board )

also how many sodimm slots are there inside the 1000? I havent looked yet as i dont have the ram.

Just a thought. I seem to remember that a few years ago some computers would only take certain ram types with a certain number of ram chips on the board. Someone has a 64mb 66mHz work but only half. I suspect it is the same as Od3rus said: The chip configuration.

From looking at the pics on the net of the RAM upgrade they have two chips on one side of the board, just need to find out how many are on the other side and maybe we could sort something out.
