but ever since they charged for people to look at em..they turned really shitty...

ebay's so mcuh safer + i've noticed, better prices usually ! lol:-) what a change...

it does take some time to locate a good deal, but ebay sure is the best place
most important is that the seller has to know what he's sellin, but you the buyer should even know it better!

I bought my 60 for 800 € w/ os 3.10 & scsi (which is by far the lowest I've seen in europe)... it looks new, doesn't even have a scratch. however I'm changing the backlight, and need to add ram (that's the only thing the seller wasn't able to certify, since it wasn't his, and hes a 3000 user). best thing in that deal is that I spoke a couple of times on the phone with the guy, who sent me pictures. And as proof of trust, he sent me the mpc BEFORE I even payed him

Ebay certainly isnt the best place to buy... BUT the main source for buying 60's and many other gear. If the ebay going price is where its at then thats the going price. Either way you cant trust people and it is what it is. Everyone has their own expectations for quality and one persons "perfect MPC" is another mans "in used condition SOLD AS IS". I agree though grow some balls cuz thats what it takes buying gear that is dated.

the mpc 60 is certainly one thing you'd guess an owner would take care of, considering its value and size... but then you see guys with rhodes and analogues in their garage, they don't even know what the stuff is! a friend got a 54 rhodes and seq. circuits pro one for free like this. they only required minimum maintenance... and the guy originally wanted to unmount the rhodes and use it as a fancy bar table!
however I've had bad surprises on other cheap gear, stuff even sold by stores (you suppose they'd be more careful... well not always). It's often some hidden, or unusual breakdown : batteries, midi and other sockets for instance : I've had a cheap mirage (now that lo fi) that couldn't reveive midi (had to get it fixed... although the store said "all machines tested", their answer was "this happens on old gear"... cheap mo'fos!)

so my point is as for other gear there are lots of things to check, besides the obvious display, floppy and pads

ibe careful with ebay. getting ripped off isnt fun.

I bought an MPC3000LE & it has problems. The sidearm came broken for one. But once you get it, you can't send it back cause the guy said when he shipped it, it wasn't broken, etc, etc, etc. The dumb*** didn't pack it right. The internal ZIP drive doesn't work. So what do you do? Scream for a couple of days and SHUT the F**K up and move on. Oh yeah, and I bought that on Ebay. Paypal wont do anything and neither will Ebay. Still, I agree that it is safer than most.

isn't there some fraud protection with paypal ?

ebay isn't that sure, but those evaluations keep crooks away a little...
also when something isn't as expected, serious sellers usually accept negociations, refunding a percentage of the sale, if not taking it back (really rare I think!). I've had some refunds over non 100 % percent working zip drives, bent or misgraded records.

A good advice would also be to have the unit delivered via a serious and even expensive company like UPS (national post services really are cheaper, but the way they treat parcels... you don't wanna know!)
if you spend a big sum on something, you might as well not be cheap on shipping!

There policy is if the item was sent, its not their problem. You can file a dispute, which I did, but they dont do anything. Only way they get involved is if someone didn't pay for an item and or if you didn't receive the item. They take your money fast, but to get it back is another story. You could sign up for their buyer protection, but I think it cost money. Watching the Giants take a beating by the Panthers. That SUCKS RIGHT NOW!

Actually i just went through the exact same thing. I filed a dispute with PayPal and got a portion of my money back. It took a while but it worked.
