Or any s series user for that matter, can you explain how the work flows on these things as far as setting a program, sampling, and keygrouping. I'm copying the tone program and renaming it to create a new program, I can sample and name those, but from there Im stuck.

I own an S-950 which I used to master but haven´t used in a while so we´ll see how much I remember.
The hierarchy is basically Program->Keygroup->Sample. You sample, name, enter edit sample mode (or whatever it´s called I don´t have my unit at home). From here you can trim the sample, loop it, resample etc.
Once you´re done enter edit program mode. Create a new keygroup either from copying the tone Kg or press + to create a new one. Here you assign one sample or several to the KG. This basically tells where on the keyboard the root note is and how far it stretches. (the reason you have this middle layer, KG, is if you multisample e.g. a piano and want to edit all samples together as one sound).
After assigning to a keygroup you can, voila, edit the KG. This includes, volume, tuning, filter, output etc. Keep in mind though; by default the unit is in midi omni mode meaning it merges all incoming midi data regardless of channel (why anyone would use this is a mystery to me but...) change this (from the midi mode) and you can assign keygroups to different midicahnnels.
This should be enough for now. Feel free to ask more if you have more detailed questions, email or in this thread.
Good luck!

i got a s5000 so maybe something will translate over. in the program mode see if there is the keygroup like last word was talkin bout and assign the sample to a keyzone, then look into multi mode. i dont know if the 950 has that feature but i would imagine it would. this allows you to set it up so you have different programs on different midi channels among other things.

[Mesh] actually no it doesn´t. The S-950 is way more old school than the S-5000 (it came with 750 kb of ram standard!). The S-950 doesn´t feature keyzones, multi mode and you can only have one program running at the same time. That program can contain many key groups and these receive on different midi channels.

LastWord, I hope your still around, I'm working on doing a whole song with the s950, now that i got more than 5 samples running at once on the s950 (before I never used it for more than 5) they are cutting each other off. Does this have something to do with running MIDI on omni or like someone else told me is this because Im running the audio through only the left output (im waiting till im done to hook up the 8 outs), seems like more of a midi problem.. thanks!

give each sound its own midi channel and output voice. Thats how it works on the 900.

Do you know how many sounds (i got one sound per KG) can run through an individual output.

I just tried changing the midi channels per KG and they still cutoff through the MIX out.

Thanks Boogie!!!

back when the only sampler I had was the 900, I used at least 8 sounds for one KG. but I had them all on separate output channels and I used the 8 outs. I think your problem is not using the 8 outs.

word, thanks Boogie.

one mo question tho.... =)

Is there an option equivalent to the MPC's mono setting for sample playback on the 950. when I set the samples to one shot and do a double tap they always overlap (equivalent to MPC's poly setting). they did not do this last time i used my 950 and i dont recall changing any settings. thanks again.
