Beat God wrote:is this really a question? the real question is why wouldn't u seperate each part? the only reason i wouldn't do it is if i used protools le with its 32 track limit. i don't so seperation it is.

pros
can swap out a sound quickly
can change levels quickly
can eq individual part
can compress individual part
can do break downs and pattern changes quickly

cons
none stop being lazy

Listen man, I acheive all those pro's when I track my beat out. When I record my drums on my MPC I take them straight into my track recorder for mixdown. So When I do my drums on track 1 sample on track 2 and so on. Now Im done with the beat. I assign each drum sound and sample to ITS OWN OUT PUT. WHICH IN TURN SEPARATES IT TRACK BY TRACK. So on my track recorder I have each sound on each track. Now from this point I can acheive each of your "Pro's" ie.. Levels, Compression, Panning ect. Yall are talking like I leave everything together or sumthing? Nah buddy. But on the real if u try it like I do its a HUGE times saver.

oh ok. I know that. Maybe my question was missunderstood by all. Im tired of explaining. Maybe if I clarify one more time.

When I track out my beats I send them In Sound by Sound with 8 outs. Not track by track. If I was sending them in Track by Track then Fuk yeah I would split each sound up first. But since I send it in Sound by Sound (8 sounds at a time) It splits it up for me. I was just trying to give peeps an alternate and more faster way of producing. Faster isnt always better but it will keep you in the groove and in your work flow better if you can just bang out everything without hitting stop all the time. When I do wanna add different swing settings then Ill switch tracks. But if the majority of drums swing at 63% than Ill leave them on one track. I was just sharing one of my technics. All I can realy say is try it out. If you like it than do it, if not than dont. I used to split every drum to its own track but I found a faster way. To each his own

lol i perfectly understand what you mean, annoying when people don't read the whole post ain't it!!

workflow for me, swing and velocity settings are easier to mess with & i don't have 8-outs OR even any recording gear yet so i'm always needing my tracks mutes

i separate so I can do hot as break downs by using track mute, while recording live, of course only when 2 tracking

...I dont track out every beat into protools because it takes a lot of time even with the 8 outs, especially if its just gonna be used on a mixtape or INDEPENDENT album

its also more organized

I just don't understand why you wouldn't track each sound to a seperate track. I thought that was why there's 64 available :?

I used to put every sound on each track.
I used to record kick snare hat crash on one track then move each to its own track. Than I would assign each sound to its own output and dump.

Than I got to thinking.... Why not record drums on 1 track sample and other sounds on their own track. Since when Im ready to dump I assign each sound its own output, whats the point in taking the time to move each sound when Im just gonna seperate them anyway when I track? I track out 8 sounds at a time not 8 tracks at a time. It works for me. I fully understand why u guys say put each sound on its own track. Ive been using that method for years. I just found a better easier way that works for me. Maybe im not explaining myself clear enuff. But their is no difference in results with my method and the traditional method. NOT 1 DIFFERENCE. On the mpc the sounds are on 1 track but when they get dumped to my recorder they come out on separate tracks. Im no rookie. If yall dont understand what I mean read again or just say fuk it.

Maybe the difference is that I don't move sounds, so it really wouldn't save time. Why do you need to move sounds? This is what I do:

Press record/playstart.

Hit the kick when you want it and just tap the desk instead of the pad w/snare when it's snare time.

Press stop.

Press the button under the LCD to move up a track.

Press record/playstart.

Put snares where you want them.

Press stop.

Press the button under the LCD to move up a track.

Press record/playstart.

Lay down your HiHats

Press stop.

ETC.....

I understand just fine, but it seems to me that the tiny little bit of time it saves isn't worth the loss of flexibility offered by using diff't tracks. But like many have said before, as long as it works for you, that's all that matters. Just one question remains...

Why have 64 seperate tracks if you only use 6-10 of them? Seems like a waste of processing power.

And u just proved my point right their. You hittin the kick taping the desk for the snare. what if u want to do a realy complicated drum program? Its impossible to remeber where u hit the snare if u dont record it. Plus look how many times u hitting stop record or overdub? Bassically if u wanna do what u doin and put each drum on its own track, RECORD EVERYTHING ON TRACK 1 AND GO INTO THE EDIT SCREEN AND MOVE EACH EVENT. Then it will move each sound to its own track. You doin it the HARD WAY. Once you learn that then u may feel where Im coming from a lil better.

LMAO @ this kid

Rookie? ROOKIE? I got YEARS of experience on the MPC, SON. When I was learning to use my MPC the tutorials on this site were still free. Do you remember when they were free? Did you even know they were ever free? Oh, that's right, you just joined last summer, and got clowned on for the first month 'cause of your attitude. Now I remember...

First off, I make my drum loops a HELL of a lot more complicated than most, and this method works just fine. Maybe YOU can't remember where you want your snares to go, don't mean I can't. No dis, but maybe you just don't have a firm enough grasp on your drums to know how you want them to sound ahead of time, and you just bang out whatever you comes out of your head. That's how I USED to be. Sh!t, now I can make a SICK drumtrack without even loading the samples, it just takes knowing where in the beat drums go. You need to go on home with that can't make complicated drums my way noise.

Second, it takes MORE time to move the notes than it does to record the way I do. I used to record my drums all to one track and then move them. Then I found a faster way. I changed ways to SAVE TIME.

Lets see...I can record 4 bars of kicks, then 4 bars of snares in about 30 seconds.

I'd like to see you move even 8 notes (and my snare tracks are usually more like 12 notes per 4 bars at least) to another track in less than 60 seconds.

 Now how is my technique "the HARD WAY"?
