Sometimes, when I've unexpectedly come across a sample that's been flipped already, I do exactly what SunnyCheeba's talking about. I try to flip the sample myself, to see what I could do about it. It takes all of the internal pressure of "making a hot beat" away because I really don't care about the results (because the sample's been used already). Just something to have fun with.

For me, it's the same concept as band warming up by playing a few covers, or a writer writing a story around a well-used topic.

While I don't have any "must sample and chop" songs, some that I do remember playing with are:

"Hydra" - Grover Washington Jr.
"Walk on By" - Isaac Hayes

Some others, but I can't remember the names/artists.

I think that you'll find that the records that producers "must flip" differ from beatmaker to beatmaker.

I don't see why cats just can't go along with the thread concept at hand. The post above me did but that was the first. It was an interesting thread idea and instead I see lectures on "do some research". I don't think Cheeba made this thread for him, we could all contribute on classic breaks just to have a discussion. If you don't feel like it, you don't have to. It just seems kind of childish...if an "expert member" had made the same exact thread, I think we'd have a lot more participation at this point.

expert memebr do searches first then if they dont find the answer they post, read the rules be fore posting this topic has come up many times theres one that megaton has posted theres plenty others theres 47 pages to go through, it's not that bad you dont read every one if you can see i seem to be the only and a few others answering . most cats dont like to answer the same question ,believe me theres plenty of topics on breaks classic breaks records on here, i aint coming down on you guys cause your nubies or what ever just try to research and if you find something in your range of question then ask and bring it back up this question has been ask'x before i'm sure in another form

You know what Really gets under my skin? When you chop up some stuff say on your computer...You got the song, took out the stuff you wanna use and arrange a nice Break and Chorus etc.... I might do 10 songs like this and put them on a CD for future use. THen one day, you cruising with the radio on and BAM!!! Somebody has used the sample you planned to use that you KNOW....KNOW Damn Well nobody else has used this song....or at least you haven't heard it yet...but in yor mind you saying DAMN that coulda been me who sold that Beat to Jay, or Missy or whoever...

Or...I like this one. You got a pile of records from a Dig, get to the crib and start playin'em...you come across an instrumental that you been hearing in widely played hip hop song and be like Damn!!! thats where they got that from! I was listening to a DONNA SUMMER album and got that effect. That Young Jeezy joint with the Horns....DS kids...

Yeah, I could see if it was a technical question like how do I do this with my mpc, if I had a question like that I'd research. But this seems harmless and its more outta curiosity. My impression was you made it sound like answering his question would be doing him a favor, when really the whole point of the thread was just to generate a discussion.

I post on another forum, and over there I've been posting for a long time, so I know what topics have been overused to death, so I feel you right there.

Beat~Monkey, I've never had that experience of sampling something, and then hearing it used by someone else. I usually stay away from sampling loops or readily identifiable phrases, party for that reason.

With that said, when I heard "Whispering Pines" by the Crusaders, I still tried to "recreate" (the loop, not the drums) what Primo did for "The B*tches," or like on that Rakim joint on the Juice soundtrack.

Why? It's easy, carefree practice.

I play instruments too, and a big part of learning the instrument is trying to play someone else's songs. Why should the MPC be any different?

i think i answer'd his question pretty fair , he wanted more indeepth to my answer i just felt the answer is here on the this forum , do the search as i keep saying, i just feel nubies dont want to take the time to research anything and have it handed to them ,
it's easy with the net nowadays to find amny answers to your questions
you never know you might find something that will help you even more then practicing with remaking abeat thats allready been made,

i dont do this method so i use this and this song to recreate this track, i see that as a time consuming choir, ilke to make progess when making a beat learn as you go

i'm still new to beat making but i know i dont want to waist time doin what some other guy did.if my music sounds like someone else's it's not cause i heard theres ,i dont even listen to any of todays music i dont know any of todays producers and how they produce, i dig for my self and if i find something that some one else on the radio used OH well we must be on the same page .

I see where you're coming from.

When I first got records I basically picked out whatever was unheard of and looked unwanted. I even picked up some corny classical joints. I just want to chop up different sounds and make my own compositions, I'm not really one for using ready made loops. That being said, I just started, so I can't really say what I'll be doing down the road.

I feel you about the time consumption.

Humans are creatures of routine, and sometimes I get stuck in a beatmaking "routine."

By trying to recreate something (usually takes about 10-15mins to get something rough) sometimes I stumble upon ideas that I hadn't even thought of.

I don't do it often, usually when I cop some records and want to highlight a used loop out of a song (the MCs I'm around don't hear it right away, for some reason).

I don't make looped beats too often, so this is like play-around time on the MPC for me.
