comew on prah, ive read your other posts an i know your smarter than that... theres a lot of things you can do with two synced mpcs that you cant do with just one, especially if you like recording in real time... if you dont like dj shadow, thats cool, but 2 mpc 3ks synced isnt money wasted... spending time programing with one what you could do easy with two is time wasted (and for some cats that means more than money).
kind of like the time im wasting writing this post...

I remember reading somewhere that he used up all 64 pads on both mpc's(128) to do the most difficult track he has ever done, the track only had drums. I never heard it as I'm not into Shadow to much but if anyone knows the name of the track i'd be interested in hearing it.

still money wasted........for a project????

i understand that......i never said i didn't like dj shadow.....i don't have enough knowledge on dude to say that.......i know about SMPTE and all but....that theory is even old and i could do alot with my mpc2000xl and then acheive a lot inside the triton(which is also a full-fledged sampler that can hold 64megs of info, which is double the amount in a 3k)...i am sorry if i offended anyone........but i was also looking for an answer...which drumtek let me know something i didn't know about dj shadow.......and you didn't waste your time posting this......if dj shadow was here i would want him to answer that question also....

you didnt offend me, im not into dj shadow that much myself...i just think that one shouldn't discount the two mpc set up out of hand:

okay heres three possible ways you could use two mpcs together:

one: use the first as the master and the second as the slave, so you are using only the internal sampler of the second mpc. this is a waste of money, you're right. just use a rack sampler or something.

two: use them side by side both synced to an external time clock: here you'd be ignoring the sequencer (which is a mistake) but using all the pads. i kind of understand this one, as its sort of like having a larger palette of sounds at your immediate access: 32 instead of sixteen. still does kinda seem like a waste of money. I mean at best you only got ten fingers. :?

three: sync one mpc to the other using midi clock and then play them both as if they were turntables. you could have a sequence running on one wile your writing a new beat on another, crossfading between the two, etc. this would be the best way to make full use of both. itd be like having two records you wrote yourself playing in perfect sync next to each other. plus itd allow you to write new beats live and in real time and then crossfade them into the mix. Does dj shadow use his mpcs this way? itd be cool if he did but i just dont know. i have read interviews with artists that do, however.

any othe ideas anyone? dj shadow? you out there and want to explain yourself?

I own the 4000 both with the 2000xl and I'm lookin' for a used 3000.I like the design and I could finally have a Roger Linn-era machine.Am I insane??? MPC is getting a kind of fetish after some time of makin' beats in that!

The way I understand it, the main reason why he has 2 3000s is because he would often run into a situation where he'd run out of space on the pads. Not memory, mind you, but the actual space on the pads. He likes to have all the sounds he's working with immediately available.

I took the liberty of digging up a quote from an interview he did with Remix magazine:

"Shadow does all his sequencing by ear using two Akai MPC3000s MIDI'd together. “The Bomb Squad, Public Enemy's producers in the '80s, used two or three [E-mu] SP-1200s MIDI'd together,” says Shadow. “They inspired me to do that, and it was a big development for me. Before I had two, I usually wouldn't run out of memory — I'd run out of pad space. And I like to have all my sounds accessible to me all the time. I like to chop things, and with one MPC, you only have 16 times four banks, so that's 64 sounds available at one time. I had just totally outgrown that.”

You can find that entire interview at http://remixmag.com/ar/remix_collage_co ... /index.htm . It's a good read. Shadow is living proof that you don't need a whole roomful of gear to get stuff done... but it does help to have a whole roomful of records.

Besides he is rich anyway... he is a walking advert for MPC's.... sells heaps of records and has a huge following....I believe he has converted to a Pro-Tools setup for his latest album.... If you saw him live you would have seen him triggering visuals using the Pad's on an MPC'

i don't really think that is dumb anymore...cuz i thought of it in a different sense....like turntables......i would be the stupidest alive to say two turntables are dumb.....think about where we would be if two turntable weren't inc'd in our culture......1200's use to cost like $600-700 each but they were almost like a must......i remember when i seen a dj with 3 1200s and i was in awe....totally stunned at the sight cuz i was use to seeing 2 tables.......def. not a waste of money

He uses Pro Tools but it's not his main sequencer. He specifically mentions that he only uses Pro-Tools for arranging, like if these particular 8 bars would work best here or there - stuff like that.

And I wouldn't say he's rich. But I'm sure he earns enough to make a living off something he loves - which I'm sure we'd all like.
