Running OSX 10.3.8 and havent found any program that actually works on converting mpc60 snd's (running mpc os 3x) to wav to use in other programs and samplers. I have managed to get the snd's on my desktop and a friend with an awave demo on a PC has managed to convert one of my snd's that i mailed to him so i know the samples aren't corrupt. Both translator and CDXtract have crashed when converting on OSX. I have thousands of samples but i'm looking at doing this on OSX rather than on the PC so anyone have the definitive OSX answer to my problem?
thanks in advance guys

no diss, but I don't see the point in doing this... it's a waste of time! (like me when I'm writing this down, except I'm also eating  )

if you use an old mpc, you might as well be classic all the way! the sounds were no meant to be transfered and that's what's fun (ok mpc editor is handy, but I tried it once the day I got the 60 and will never use it again). it's like if you had an old rhodes and still wanted to use it via midi!

its far easier to have a sampler that's built to do it through usb or scsi (and some are now pretty cheap : S3000XL, EMU ESI...)

Its gotta be annoying since the PC has so many transfer utilities that work and it really can help people incorporate the older gear into the modern environment.

I prefer sampling direct into my 60, but the fact that the MPC editor allows me to take sounds from my compuyter and just load them into the MPC makes it useful in ways that I need it to be sometimes.

Apple likes fuking their customer base.

Buying a PC may be the way to get this done in one hit , but i can't be the only one making music with MPC's in a Mac OSX only environment surely?!

As much as i love the 60 , more and more for me its about doing sessions in different places where you may or may not have a 60, or it maybe a Battery setup or EMU, or EXS24 prog etc where having a portable library is more useful in a generic format rather than relying on having a 60 there. I'm switching to a 4000 for partly this reason, no diss to the 60 of course, just the way i'm working, portability and ease of transfer. Having scoured the groups and boards was just suprised there doesnt seem to be anything simple OSX wise that works snd to wav, i've seen the scripts the other way round for wav to snd3k conversion to the mpc60 if you're using the 3000 software in it which i've used.. . .but still no 60snd to wav

so if anyone's had luck let me know.....

thanks guys

"Try YACC (Yet another audio converter): "

The SND file it expects is not the same as the MPC SND format. The artritarily attached three letter extension is NOT a reliable indicator of the contents of the files. Just because it has SND on the end tells nothing.

As far as the question, I am not aware of anything that converts MPC60 SND to anything. They are not the same as the SND found on the Web, SND files from MPC000, and still diffferent from MPC2k SND.

I think it may be easier to to just load up all the samplez in the MPC and systematically trigger all them while recording in one long track in a recorder. Chop and sort.

The low tech way is usually the best way.

Dude! Try that sample function....key pad (5).....man it's S W E E T!!! Works better than converting your computer sounds from 16 > 12-bit resolution. No loss in quality whatsoever. Try it and you might like what you hear.

"Try that sample function'

He already did. That is part of the issue. Once the sample in MPC, it is pretty difficult to get it out of the MPC, unless you just play it back (which sounds sort of odd to say since that is what the MPC is designed to do).

Yes, there is always the option of loading up the sounds and playing them out to the computer and saving as required , but with thousands of samples its a little tedious.

That YAAC is offline at the moment but indeed it looks like it is the standard RAW format, not the MPC snd. Pgmmaker's a great utility but only for 3000 format snd's, and getting them into the MPC rather than the other way round (the way i'm looking for). Bare in mind even with the upgraded software in the MPC60 you are still sampling at 12bit as opposed to 16 on the 3K so the snd format is different.

I'm still looking around so i'll let you know if i find anything that works.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

After a lot of hunting for the solution I went with Awave on a friend's PC. If anyones interested I accessed the mpc60s samples from its connected optical scsi drive and dragged and dropped via Aksys onto the Mac, burnt a CD and loaded onto the PC. Conversion took a few seconds and then burnt a cd to load back up on the mac. Sad we OSX users havent got a solution as yet, maybe some wizard fancies making a little program just for this. I'm sure there would be plenty of appreciative users. Now on with the MPC4000 learning curve!

BTW its funny to hear the MPC60 samples in wav form, not coming out of the 60's outputs. The D to A of the 60 is definately a big part of that grainy sound, the A to D conversion is surprisingly clean . .

yeah the 60 has that magic you want to record.

heart it on tape vs. protools ande youi really get how it adds that sparkle.

So you mean that the mpc60 sounds doesn't sound that great played from the MPC4000? If so, the best thing would be to sample them into the 4k to get that D/A thing. I will do that 'cause I haven't got that much sounds but you, for the future, should maybe pick out your favourites as you had a lot.

"Yes, there is always the option of loading up the sounds and playing them out to the computer and saving as required , but with thousands of samples its a little tedious."

I was thinking about this over the past couple of days and came to conclusion that recording the sound directly out the MPC60 is the best way to do it.

Part of the reason is that atttempts to convert the 40kHz 12-bit sound to other formats mathematically really do not do the sound justice. For reasons more advanced that I care to get into here, there is something lacking in converting the sound (I have written programs to do it myself). I would rather rely on digital to analog conversion and having an infinite analog range to sample range to sample into some other format.
