or the 78's =)
This is what i do if i'm without particular inspiration or just want to relax.
Make a new kick, make a new snare (if you sample them, warp the shit out of them until they are YOU, Tweak filter cuttoffs and resonances, eq and layer sounds, try the stupidest ideas you can think of, they may be amazing) ETA: 30 min or so unless i get hung up on finding a matching sound.
Make a new preset on my synth ETA: 20-30 minutes depending on what im going for and if i get sidetracked (this also depends on the sort of synth you are editing, familiarity and controls, doing this on my ESX1 takes like 5 minutes tops, but i usually program the Waldorf.)
Next i play with my kick/snare and make a few different 8 bar patterns of different styles/speeds ETA: Depends on my mood\groove 30m-1h is safe.
Then i start laying my synth over these beats, trying different keys, trying lead lines, trying tuned down basslines, percussive notes, etc ETA: This is the part that can go on forever if you want, but once you find something that you love or someone walks by and asks about it, you are good to go.
Load up some other presets or start making some other drums and you are off. layer, layer, listen, layer, eq, listen, layer, listen, eq, drink, smoke, listen, repeat. =P
