Sorry Nate.

Put politely, yes indeed samuraisam, i see where you're coming from, but I am loathe to disagree with you, as are many other comrades on this forum. Akai do not appear to be treating their customers in a very nice way. That's just not cricket!

Personally, I think it's wrong for chaps (or ladies - you just don't know these days!) to have to pay additional monies for another hard disk drive when they have upgraded to the most recent operating system.

I shall be writing to my local Member of Parliament on this issue (in this case, it's Prime Minister Tony Blair). Maybe he can get President George Shrub - sorry, Bush, to bomb Akai and Seagate into submission.

as my last comment ever to a thepillage posting.

You're acting as if you didn't buy an mpc 1000 yourself. Oh wait, that's right, you did, and you took it up the ass as everyone else did. so shut up and quit bitching, I know girls on PMS that shut up for longer than you.

You're the type of kid who can't spell school. You sound like a completely incompetent dumbass, you are unable to form proper sentences and you are an embarrassment to mankind, your parents, and your school if you went to one.

hah, as i said already, the BBB is there for a reason, but i severely doubt they or anyone else will do anything as Akai has already provided you with a solution, keep the default OS, as to whether that is fair or not...

What would you do if you were AKAI? start handing out 10,000 free hard disks? AKAI paid for the hard disks with expectations that they'd be the same, seagate changed the hard-disks without informing akai, so akai is stuck with a few thousand units. Akai got shafted by seagate, and as a result, we got shafted by akai.
MPC and DSP users paid for what they got with the hope of future OS updates, what would everyone be saying if AKAI didn't update any of it's products?

Defective / incompatible, whats the difference in this scenario??? Bottom line it doesn't work with the firmware update.

Akai may have paid for the hard drives and I agree they can't start handing out free one's, which is why I have said all along in this thread that the issue is between Seagate and AKAI to resolve.

The whole idea of supplier agreements is that companies work together to provide a satisfactory product to the consumer. If this isn't the case AKAI should pull the product from sale, resolve the issue with Seagate and then sell to the consumer once rectified, not sell and then say, our updates don't work anymore, go buy some more components.

What if you were to buy the product and 6 months down the line something else you have bought doesn't work well with the DPS24 unless you get the latest firware revision? Your stuffed basically, got to fork out for AKAI / Seagates c*** up.

Your comment "what would everyone be saying if AKAI didn't update any of it's products?" I don't really understand where you are coming from but if you mean what would people do if they knew AKAI did not provide firmware updates to iron out product glitches and usability?

Well in responce to that I probably would not buy AKAI products as I am too wise to know that updating music related products is essential as more often that not compatibility issues occur.

P.S No need to apologise pdx2000, the comment earlier was not in anyway directed towards yourself :)

Totally unfair. It's like Akai are saying "We got screwed, and we're p*ssed about it, so now we're gonna screw our customers. We won't do anything to rectify the problem with Seagate HDs, Seagate aren't gonna do sh*t, so we're leaving it up to the customer to spend some more money if they wanna use our latest OS. Hopefully the blame won't fall on us, but on Seagate alone."

Ask yourselves though - is Akai being sensible about this whole issue?

I mean if AKAI did NO OS updates EVER for ANY of it's products, the cost would be the same.
I'd say that the biggest incentive for akai to update it's products is the fact that it boosts sales.

The mere fact that AKAI publicly acknowledges the issue shows that they aren't trying to screw over the customers.

I disagree on that I am sorry Samuraisam.

If you take the support channels out of any product (i.e cust services, R&D etc) it would save companies a whole bunch of cash. In this instance Akai could then lower the cost of their product, hit a whole new market (i.e Music Hobbiests) and sell a whole bunch more.

A product's price is built up on an accumilation of different factors, manufacturing costs, shipping costs, support costs (as above), profit margin etc etc (I could go on forever but that would be boaring) :) lol

Us as a consumer only see the final figure (what we buy it for) and assume that everything else is free, contact / call centre support, new firmware etc. In reality the money men have already built these costings into the product and we paid for them at the point of purchase.

samuraisam wrote:I'd say that the biggest incentive for akai to update it's products is the fact that it boosts sales.

Infact having mulled this around in my head you arn't far wrong in that to a majority of people (as discussed above) things like firmware etc are percieved as free and this in turn does boost sales but I hope my explanation above gives you an idea about why I feel it is AKAI's responsibility to do something in the case of the defective HD shipping in the DPS24.

The consumer has already paid for the support, AKAI need to get Seagate involved and rectify the situation. Lets face facts we are probably not talking about a shed load of DSP24's here.

Nate ;)

Strange enough there's no problem with the SeaGate firmware under 1.5. But instead of solving the compatibility problem with 1.6 they tell the customer (in an ice cold statement) to buy another HD or stick with some old OS.
If they can't fix it with an OS they should swap the HD. They don't have to swap 10.000 HDs, according to the statements: "SeaGate recently changed the firmware on this hard drive model". So it's only those models.

Again people, it's obvious what's going on here.
I think it's save to conclude it's going to be a cold and lonely winter for recent DSP24 buyers as far as Akai is concerned.

yes, but akai won't buy 1 hard disk at a time, they'll buy it bulk, so they'll be stuck with a few thousand dud HD's.

Exactly, and that's where Akai's lawyers come in and contact SeaGate.
But instead of returning those thousand dud HD's back to SeaGate they rather sell them to thousand customers, and put a bold statement on their site.

Seagate are the ones responsibile for changing the firmware and not telling AKAI, in which case AKAI should be "telling" them to provide replecement drives.

Unless AKAI have a really shoddy supplier agreement setup with Seagate then I would have thought they have a case to get them replaced at no cost.

Although having learned alot about AKAI over the past 6 months / 1 year I would probably be more inclined to think that they have a shoddy supplier agreement setup, have already asked Seagate and they probably just brushed them off saying your problem due to the fact its your firmware thats the problem.

In which case why don't AKAI just release a new firmware addressing the issue rather than telling people to buy a new HD? :?

"In which case AKAI should be telling them to provide replecement drives"

Umm, Akai does not buy enough drives from Seagate to be able to throw that much weight around.

AP: "Hi, you changed the firmware on the drives without telling us."
SG: "Sure we did. Didn't you read the warranty and disclaimer on the side of the box that says we reserve the right to make changes to the product at any time"
AP: "We'll show you, we will stop buying these [looks down at sales figures for the DPS24], umm, 5 drives each month from you."
