first and foremost i would like to say that i *suprised look on my face* have to agree with thepillage on one thing. he stated or should i say corrected someone when they said "akai doesn't need you, you need akai." in this respect alone, i agree with thepillage and no where else. although one would think we need akai, akai (and any other manufacturer for that matter) needs the consumer to stay in business.

ok now back to this debate. i bet if i took that same hard drive in question and put it in my computer it would work. there is nothing wrong with the hard drive. the drive works as seagate wants them to work. it's just not totally compatiple with akai's new OS. akai does not need to go back to seagate for anything as i mentioned, the drive is not defective (seagates' liability)

what akai should do is tell the consumers who wish to upgrade to 1.60, to hold off on upgrading until OS 1.61 is released because there is a compatibility issue with the hard drive and os v1.60. AND THEN give the consumer an option: if you really want to upgrade to 1.60 now, then you have to and purchase a new hard drive (at your expense) OR you can just wait until 1.61 is released.

that way, akai is informing the consumer of an issue regarding OS 1.60 at the same time reassuring the consumer that the issue will be corrected. that takes the liability off of akai AND seagate. and put the choice of what to do directly on the consumer.

Umm, Akai does not buy enough drives from Seagate to be able to throw that much weight around.

AP: "Hi, you changed the firmware on the drives without telling us."
SG: "Sure we did. Didn't you read the warranty and disclaimer on the side of the box that says we reserve the right to make changes to the product at any time"
AP: "We'll show you, we will stop buying these [looks down at sales figures for the DPS24], umm, 5 drives each month from you."
SG: <click>

Seagate screwed up, so AKAI should be insisting to them (as a buyer of their products) that the service they have recieved isn't good enough and they want a resolution.

Just because a company / person isn't a bulk buyer it doesn't mean that they are entitled to a lesser service if there are grounds for a complaint.

By your very words, AKAI arn't a big bulk buyer, in which case if AKAI had the decency to stick up for their comsumers and become a pest to Seagate (maybe threatening court action if they don't get anywhere), somebody at Seagate would eventually say "just exchange them" it's more hasstle than its worth, we have bigger fish to fry and can sell the other HD's as reconditioned PC etc.

This scenario would only play out though if AKAI started to kick up a stink for their customer sake, its obvious that they have no intention of doing that and an even easier resolve is for them to create a new firmware with increased HD compatibility.

Instead they throw the onus on the consumer which simply isn't fair!

In which case I suggest that you never look into starting your own business with the whole "we don't need you, you need us attitude".

You really think that this is the best way to win customers Sparq???

seagate did not screw up. akai is not their only customer. as was mentioned previously, upgrading firmware is to better the product. well seagate did that. the drive WORKS. the problem lies in the code of the OS that akai wrote and released as version 1.60 that is the problem. akai can correct that problem with a revision of that code. introducing.... version 1.61.

hardware is hardware seagate screwed up by not informing akai of the changes in the newer hd, akai as always will fix the bugs up, these problems with hardware has always been an issue u see it with computer software all the time even in games its visually noticeable when cell shading cant work yet ur hardware supports it but doesnt supports the latest cell shader etc. these thigns will get fixed as for akai telling there buyers to hold off is fine akai isnt doing anything wrong by saying that. its netiher seagates fault or akais this mishaps happen all the time its nothing new

May I draw your attention to an earlier post by myself that is along the lines of what you are saying Sparq;

nate247 wrote:In which case why don't AKAI just release a new firmware addressing the issue rather than telling people to buy a new HD? :?

Whichever way you look at it the issue is with either AKAI or Seagate, to ask the comsumer to sort it out is (as I have said) not fair.

But AKAI are not saying hold off for a new OS, they are saying downgrade (but what if the user has glitches) or buy a new HD, and I quote their website;

Akai wrote: a) You can downgrade back to v.1.50 by downloading the software and reinstalling it into the unit, or
b) If you wish to take advantage of the features in v.1.60, you will need to back up your work and purchase either of the following hard drives to replace the existing DPS24 hard drive

In fairness perhaps I was a bit too long winded about it in the first instance but in a nutshell that was the point I was trying to make.

Glad I got it across in the end :oops:

In all fairness.
no one here actually owns a DPS24. or they're just stupid.

AKAI has already released os 1.61 which means either, the problem is fixed, or it is never going to be fixed.

Ok, well trying to move the subject on to something relevant to the 1K, anyone going to NAMM and that dreaded question, is it likely that the new OS will be unveiled anytime soon?

I have been offered a brand new MPC 2500 for £750.00 GBP ($1,317.85 USD) and am quite tempted but realise that the 1K's new OS will pretty much bring it up to the 2.5k's feature set so don't wanna jump ship and regret it is the OS is out in the next few days :) lol

the os is not going to be released during NAMM.

I appreciate that, just wondered if in anyone's opinion it was worth getting the 2.5k for such a good price or as you have often advised "sit tight" as the new OS will provide many of the features that the 2.5k does.

Also was just trying to get us back on the subject of the 1K as we had our wrists slapped for straying off subject with the DSP24 conversation :wink: lol

my personal opinion is if you already have a 1k, don't get rid of it in lieu of the 2500. unless you really need the 2 extra midi outs, a numeric pad, grid edit and bigger pads.
