need help sampling

i try to sample from my stereo, i use a cable (rca on one side, 1/4 inch on the other) i connect the rca side to my video/aux on my stereo, then i connect one 1/4 plugin to the "record in", then i connect the other 1/4 to the "phones" outlet of my stereo, then when i try to sample you can barley hear the sound, and i got the record gain knob all the way up, Please, someone help me out and tell me what i'm doing wrong or what i need so i can hear the sound louder!

hook up just the phones to the mpc.

And set the stereo to the source of the sample (tape, CD, Phono..)

so just connect the 1/4 to the "phones" and the other 1/4 inch to the record in outlet?
