Your melody technique

My melodies are kinda blah, Just wonderin what everyones technique for makin their melodies(from samples) is so i could try some different ways.

My technique is "humming" and then I just memic whatever Im humming on the MPC. Peace

Auto Chromatic is one of my best friends..

I usually find a good melodic sample, chop it into 16 zones, and play certain parts of the sample to come up with a new melody. I'll resample the new melody twice, one to make a bassline (take out mids and highs)and the other to layer on top of the bassline. Once I do that, I pan-delay the new melody to give it that ATCQ type of feel. (ATCQ=A Tribe Called Quest)

Pg 117, chapter 7 in the 2kxl manual describes it and shows you how to do it.. It's like 16 levels but it's 64 levels and it takes up one whole DRUM, it is it's own PGM..

No joke i was just gonna post this same question, its a good thing i searched beforehand to see if anyone else was havin similar probs...

After some serious thought, I came to the realization that i need like a keyboard workstation [motif or trition, etc...] b/c searching through my MP-7 for "THAT" sound is too time consuming, and takes away from the beat process.

Those were some excellent techniques posted by lampdog & DandyDon, if anyone has anything else plz do share...thanx
