aight its like this.. been tryin to break this whole beat makin thing.. all i gotz is an mpc 1k a turntable and some of the dopest records outta this side of the world..

i don't have a computer but i can get access to one... public library.. (don't laugh) it ain't even got a cd player tho..

are we as producers limited to the samples we use... aight check its like this i copped this dope sample..

http://s58.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3DH9 ... 0LCT04SQPW
nothing special jus tryin to learn here..

i made some drums to try and put em to this sample.. but they is at 90BPM.. but they sound to slow to go wit this sample...

1.. how i find the EXACT tempo of THAT sample above.....

2. from searches on here it seems liek if i find the tempo of it, i can change it to whatever tempo i want, (time compress?)... but that'll slow the sample down and make it useless...say i slow it down to 90bpm?

3. how do i make these samples fit in the mpc... aka sample is bout 26 seconds long.. so i tried countin it out in bars came out wit like 9 and 2 beats?...but on the mpc i can only make bars either 9 or 10.. not in between so the loop is all off..

4. if i sample something, am i LIMITED to makin the beat at whatever the tempo of the sample is? ex. if i sample a 4 bar tune wit tempo of 148, i have to make a beat wit temp of 148 right? but aint' hip hop 80-95BPM.. it seems it might be too fast. ...

i saw this video by some dude called Dub J, he was talkin bout art of time stretchin which seems is what i may be tryin to get at... he was talkin bout he stretched his sample tempo to match that of his percussion(drums) wit soundforeg or some ish to make his orginal sample which was way to fash match his drums... is that what i'm tryin to do here?

hope this ish makes sense..

help a young IGNORANT a$$ punk out....

knowledge me... school me..

k man you have a lot to learn

first of all, trim this sample. it repeats itself...so trim it so it only plays once if you know what i mean.

then zone up this piano sample so each note is a separate file

set a 4 bar loop and set the tempo to whatever you want

recreate the melody by tapping the pads in the same order (speed will be different depending on tempo you chose, but after recreating the order, you can change the tempo to make it more what it was originally

move to another track and make your drums

you're done (with 4 bars, now find about 8 other complementary samples, 3 other drumkits and a variety of basslines...and don't forget to throw in a breakdown...

also by having the piano notes zoned you can then write ur own melodies, hence chop and scwrewin it

By KrisK-One Tue Jan 24, 2006 5:48 pm
^^^His right, your sample repeats itself exactly after the 4th bar (plus never sample a half bar for a loop).
Then, you'll have a lot of possibilities:
- you can chop the sample as nym said
or

- make a patched phrase (you'll have to tweak a little the release parameter in order to avoid the weird sliced sounding )

or

- timestretch your loop to desired tempo (edit screen while in trim mode)

BTW your sample is at 67.43BPM (more or less did it quick)

aight got it chopped down to 4 bars...

1. i'm on a homie computer he has audicity, its seems mad easier to chop up ish cuz you can see where the sample is being played.. where as the mpc you have to kind guess huh? there's no way to make a bar showin where in the sample its being played on the mpc 1k like audacity and soundforge got? is that a computer thing?

2. how the hizzy you find out the BPM on that? i copped this site http://mp3.deepsound.net/eng/samples_calculs.php but it dont' show how to calculate a BPM on a song much less a sample..

3. aight i gotz do research on the rest of what yall sed, zone? patched phrase? d8M!

main n here i thought makin beats.. was jus findin a dope sound and somehow loopin it and then JUS addin my OWN drums and thats it..

got d*m i'm gettin in on some ish...

would takin a begginer piano class help/

the community center in my area is doing classes on that..

see if i should sign up..

thanks yall

just get that sample into ur mpc, u only need half of that to use cuz it repeats itself like the others said. then go into trim mode trim it so that when you hold down pad 13 it loops on beat. then play it out as a one-shot and tap the tempo button untill the right tempo is found, try looping it into whatever tempo your trying. you have to set the Bars to the right amount also. probably not more help than what has been posted but i tried. you gotta take a look at the manual too.
then once u got it trimmed and found a tempo, you can chop it up and assign to different pads different pieces of the sample and play around with it to the beat.

not for what you're doing.

time will help. experience will help. you're entering a REALLY REALLY DEEP world here man...it's gonna take you thousands of hours of work. please be prepared.

producing is not easy.

you need to know your tools.

Many methods. On the site you have linked , take a lok at the 8th and 9th calculators, then in Audacity have a look at the lower right....

I would disagree with nym on that one, it would help you by provding basic music theory knowlege. It wouldn't teach u how to use the mpc though.

here, take this sample./ i trimmed it perfectly. now, enter your tempo at 67.6 and watch it loop seemlessly

now, go into timestretch, enter 67.6 and enter your new tempo.
go back to main, make a sequence with the new tempo and the timestretched sample. it should be exaclty like the 67.6, except timestretched and ready for drums and more programming.

remember, in some cases (this one) you'll want to leave a littl ebit of heads and tails on the sample.

i'm guessin you mean on the new os ver right? cuz ain't no time stretch on the mpc 1k that i got, i read the manual nothing, per this forum it ain't on there?

but check it i'm still at homeboys computer.. so i pulled up your sample in audacity and i clicked on change tempo which is the same as timestretch right?

put in 67.6 as my bpm changed it to 90BPM... now your sample is all speed up..

i mean yeah it stretched it but now its faster? i guess i got lost on what you was tryin to show me wit that..

cuz how will it loop the same if the length of time is now different then at the other temp. i.e. in this case shorter..
i appreciate all this help fellas.. i mean read the manual n all that but w/o substance it was jus words. i'm out to re read it again tho soon..

but wanted to see what yall could help me out wit here..

it's all in the math...if a loop is at 90 BPM, that means that 4 beats (1 measure) of that loop will take a certain amount of time. If it is at 100 bpm, it will take a little less. At 80bpm a little more.

Here's how it breaks down:
T is your tempo, beats per minute. N is the number of beats in your sample. (if your sample is 1 measure long, then N is 4, cuz there are 4 beats in a measure). Lm is how long the sample is, in minutes.

T (beats per minute) = N (beats) / Lm (minutes)

It's that simple. Now you probably want to figure out your length in seconds, not minutes. Since there are 60 seconds in a minute, Ls = Lm * 60...also known as Ls / 60 = Lm. So that first equation would be:

T (beats per minute) = N (beats) / [Ls (seconds) / 60]

or

T = 60 * N / L

Now if you know two of the variables, you can figure out the third. Example. Your sample has 4 beats (N) and you want it to be at 90 BPM (T). So: 90 = 60 * 4 / L, so L = 60 * 4 / 90, so L = 2.666667 seconds.

It's easy.

get to ya public library and visit www.akai-pro.com and u can download os 2.1 and put it on ur compact flash cd, then ur mpc 1000 can hav the os 2 and timestretching and all the other features too
