Hi peeps my first post so plz go easy cuz i know this might sound stupid to some but i could really use some help as i am new to the whole hardware side'a things but plz bare with me. After investin in an MPC 2000XL a few months ago i got to playin around with the pads and figued i should get a midi keyboard for my leads and melodies to help me get more creative cuz i wasnt really feelin the pads other than for drums so i borrowed my friend's ROLAND PC-180A which only has MIDI OUT so i went and bought a cable to connect it to the MIDI IN of my MPC and was hopin to use it to trigger samples on the MPC.

The problem is i dont' hear anythin when i press a key, i opened the monitor up on the MIDI INPUT and i can see data is comin through on channel 6 and all keys are registerin when i hit them, but how do i assign a sound to the keyboard like i would to a pad so i can hear it when i press the keys? I have also heard u gota run a MIDI OUT from the MPC to the MIDI IN of the keyboard but i don't see why this is necassary since i am only sending data/commands from the controller so why should it need a cable back to the keyboard? Is this why it is not working? Bare in mind that the keyboard does not have a MIDI IN just a MIDI OUT so what's the deal? Can i still use it?

I've searched the forums high and low and can't seem to find anythin that relates to this but surely someone has faced this problem before? Can anyone shed any light on this i would really appreciate it and thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Cheers... Ed

Thats your problem right their. your midi connection is wrong. You need to go

MPC midi out ----> Controller midi in

Thx for the reply but i dont understand how that works since i thought the data from the controller needs to be send OUT to the IN on the MPC to control the data? The way you explained seems like the MPC will be controlling the keyboard instead of the other way around? You are probably right i know but can you explain why? Dumb question i know but the whole midi thing is new to me !

Do i only need the one MIDI cable then ? And i guess i need a different keyboard which has MIDI IN? Thx in advance.
