boosting a instrument

is there a way to boost the volume of an instrument if it is not loud enough, even the volume is all the way up on the mixer. i know how to turn the whole track up but i need one instrument boosted.

just layer another pad with that same instrument.. using the simul function.... just adjust the volume to avoid that metallic tinny effect... shit...

you should turn down all the other instruments. In that way you boost the loudness of the instrument you want without adding distortion. you can do that on your hardwaremixer, or in the MPC internal mixer.
Mixdown is setting each voice into a good relation with each other, not fighting against.

enter Program mode, tap the pad that's too quiet.

The first page has a Mode option. It should read Normal by default. Change this to Simult. Two new fields will appear, allowing you to layer your pads. Choose another pad (by rolling the wheel again) with the same sound assigned to it. You can determine the note number of a pad by tapping the other pad and noting the number A01, etc, then tapping the original pad and selecting the note number.

This should double up the volume of the original sound, though it may give you an accidental phase effect where the two sounds **** with one another's formants. Don't recall off the top of my head.

Also, you could try normalizing the samples in question using any old utility.

one more way:
in the trim screen choose params...you can set the level of the sample there...normally its 100, you can increase up to 200.

you should go the way for lowering the other stuff though, technically much preferable in doing a proper mixdown.

1) Go into the paramaters (from the edit screen) and increase the value from the default 100
2) Turn the gain knob up on your mixer (try to avaid if possible)
3) If you have another sampler, re-sample it, and then turn the record gain up on the MPC.. this way you get a hotter signal (louder).. if you don't have a sampler, you can use a recorder, tape deck etc.. you just need something to record and playback the sound.
4) You can normalize the signal.. only thing is the MPC doesn't have that function.
(with #3, you are essentially normalizing the signal, even tho you don't have a button (function) that does it for you. Just make sure when you re-sample it back to the mpc, you get it as loud as possible without the record gains!)

Here's a lil tip to avoid all this.. whenever you sample, the wave should reach the top and bottom of the sample screen. Certain sounds, like hi-hats (not all)may not be loud enough to do this, but sample your sounds as loud as possible.. it's easier to turn it down, than it is to turn it up.
Avoid using the gain knobs as much as possible, the more gain, the more noise.. if you use a lot of gains on your music, chances are your gonna need more equipment, or more money mastering to remove the noise later.
Basically, if you get it right the first time, you avoid wasting time/money trying to fix the damage later.
