I read in scratch magazine how to seperate vocals but i dont use protools. I have searched but for whatever reason im not coming out with very much. Sorry if this has been covered (i knwo it has) but i need a little help.
it's very difficult to separate different sounds from an already existing sample. the reason why, is that there is no software in the world that can identify a 'drum' sound and remove it from a sample. it's simply too complex a task because the individual sounds will have a range of frequencies, and if you cut out those particular frequencies, you will more than likely affect another sound in the sample that you don't want to remove.
having said that though, if the sound you want to remove has a fairly narrow frequency range, you should be able to remove it with some creative EQing.
it also helps if the sample has quite an 'empty' mix, ie kick drum and vocal, because then when you remove one set of frequencies it is less likely to remove any of the sound you want to keep.
hope this helps, sorry for rambling!
