how in the hell do they get their drums to sound like that?? their swing is friggin crazy!

you know what i mean? like they use a lot of shakers in their beats. but they are always like....."off"

sounds real tight. anyone know what i mean? anyway does anyone know how to do stuff like that? like what swing settings and stuff? that off feel is tight.

not tryna imitate what they do, cause that's part of their own sound...but i wanna know how to acheive that swing...

yeah thats what 9th uses, hes so repetitive he never switches anything up, but his beats have a nice feel

I think he's just using percussion loops that you can get off percussion records. I know thats what hi-tek uses.
I get alot of my percussion loops off this rob snyder record I have.
I just chop them up so they fit different beats.

yea grimay ytour probably right...just dosnt sound sampled but i guess thats how they want it...

fruity loops can do that? but same with little brother, a lot of their beats sound kinda similar. but its all good.

thanks

probably preset software groove settings....those seem like a copout to me.

my suggestion is find the tempo they used and try to recreate exactly what they did in a test run

and then replace a note there, more a note there. you'll learn through emulation.

Yup. A maracca or shaker loop will make your beat sound off ahead or behind all depending on the length.

I find it's real easy to get this type of swing in Reason but hard on the MPC. But it is real hard to get that super tight you need to see the #'s knock out of Reason. It's a quantise thing. The thing in Reason that allows you to do this is the User quantise and the random quantise. Nicolay is no doubt using Reason, I catch him using certain Factory sound bank Rex files. Try using the swing different on each track this tends to make ish sound off but still in time.

Little Brother is 9th Wonder's group, and his production is based around FL and pre-existing loops and drums.
If you don't want to use percussion loops, just learn to program your percussion like a percussionist.
Get an understanding of embellishments and how to fit things into a groove and you can do your own.

That's the whole problem with the MPC, that feel that people swear they love is always present to some degree even when you are set at 50%.
the only way to get around it is to turn the quantize off, but then a person has to be able to actually play something.
I think people would be surprised at how much better a MPC is with hand that have rhythm instead of that classic MPC swing.

hmm...so im guessing FL can be controlled by MIDI? Is FL available as a Plugin with something like cubase?

i wouldnt mind programming some percussion or hihats in FL. now that I remember the different groove settings, i would like to use them. Not too big on using FL but if it has the tools i need, then i want to use them.

maybe i can program my percussion or hihats in FL and the rest of the beat on the mpc...maybe use it as a plugin and when im tracking out, i can just record what i did in FL....

anyway, thanks for all the help. yall got the answer to everything! lol

smoove, you can use FL as a VST plugin in cubase/nuendo. It's called something like FL Studio Multi..

9th uses the same drums over and over again.. he usually have a sick sample and chop it up real easy, making it sound like a loop. I found some records 9th used and was like.. wow, he's doing no-shit to his samples.

anyway, that swing is just a programming thing, if you have the patience to do it on a PC.. good job.. it is possible on a MP, ofcourse..

the best thing to do is study alot on percussion and the usage of it in music (no mather what music) and recreate the feeling you're after.

(sorry for my bad english, i'm a dutchguy)
