For anyone getting the DIRECTORY ERROR

For those of us who were getting the DIRECTORY ERROR when saving... I was getting it with my CF card, but I saw some people were also getting it on their hard drives. At first I didn' t think it was a big deal because after getting the error, the second save attempt would always be error-free. It seemed that I was only getting the error when I was OVERWRITING existing files. So then after that happened a number of times, my CF card was getting corrupted, and I was getting strange errors such as all my folders temporarily disappearing... After backing up and reformating a few times, I decided that maybe the directory error was causing the corruption, and that maybe I shouldn't overwrite files anymore. So now, instead of overwriting, I delete the directory first, then re-create it and save to the empty folder. Since I have started doing this, I have had NO MORE DIRECTORY ERRORS! So I guess that it did have something to do with the overwrites. Just wanted to let you guys know in case you having the same problem... is it possible that OS 2.1 has a bug that causes overwriting of files to mess up? Not 100% sure about that yet, but it's looking like that might be the case...

yea it definitely only happens when overwriting files
although ive had NO problems with corruption
i simply make a second attempt, and it works
im going to use your method before i start having to deal with corrupt files - thanks for the heads up!

even then, the new method takes more time
hopefully theres a NEW small os update soon that fixes these bugs

me too, when i tried to overwrite a project folder. i just create a new folder and it should be fine.

this might be happening because you're trying to overwrite a file thats being used. The same thing happens if you try to overwrite a file thats being used on the pc.

I only get errors when I save all memory and I select 'replace same files': NO.
If I select 'replace same files': YES i get no errors.
Try it...

it's all clear now. i was havin' this problem and freakin' out, so i ordered the hard drive kit. thanks for the info, i'll try that in a minute.

I've gotten the same error both ways.

Not sure about that theory... I'm pretty sure that the only time the MPC accesses the hard drive or CF card is when it is saving or loading. If a file is in use, it is only in use in the ram. Unlike a computer which may go back to access the drive every once in a while.

someone please tell me why all of a sudden overwriting is bad, ive only had probs on my cf card not my harddrive, but the card was shitty n e way

It's so amazing how we all react to this unit, but I'm sure each has had an issue with saving to cf cards. Although not overwritting files patches up the problem, the same thing could occur again. The main thing to remember is that there is a limit to what can be saved to the root folder on the card. For the brain to search for these files effectively with no error, create folders, sub-folders and projects to optimize the ram. This way things are organized and you don't have to go through muck and mire trying to save one sample!

Uh, yeah thanks, I think... it's not a directory limit error. My card is super organized in sub directories and all, but even if it wasn't, technically there is no limit to the number of files you can put in the root directory. I believe you are mistaken.

but it didnt happen be4 os.2

it happened on os 1.7 for me on my battered mpc. seriously i think this is a bug with the mpc 1000, or mayb its just a dodgy card reader, or mayb cf card are easier to crrupt than first thought. happened all the time for me, but remember my mpc was pretty ****. just to let ya know, i wasnt the only person who had this problem. mayb its just worse in os 2.1 . if it is a bug, its a very very shitty thing to hav overlooked.
