People tend tend miss the repetition in their MPC programming.
Just listen the drum grooves from Premier and notice the repetition in his beats.
His cuts and samples is what makes his songs another song but if you strip them down the drums are pretty much the same feel.
9th Wonder is working the same way, except FL doesn't have a set distinction like the MPC.
I use to think peoples desire to sound Pete Rock or Premier was the culprit but the MPC's feel plays very heavily into the reason why people tend to get those familiar Boom Bap type beats on the MPC.
Whether is a good or bad thing is personal choice but when you go with quantize OFF it opens up new paths.

now about studying this percussion stuff, where could I go to learn about that? Im sure there's lots of online places but is there anything in particular I should look at/for?

I saw things like that about playing the bass and drumming techniques, but nothing ever about percussion. im so into music i dont think people really know. im so into it like im willing to go buy a tambourine or some congas or shakers and record that sh*t live. i like stuff like that.

if thats the route I have to go then fine with me! but in the meantime, i gotta figure it out with this machine. so thanks for all the tips. time to read!

Turning off quant means you have to be able to place the notes where you want them instead of where the MPC says they should be so it as good as your ability.

As far as learning, contrary to what people believe the internet is the worst place to try and learn.
It's just full of opinions that people try to pass off as facts and never correct when proven wrong.
Visit the library, take a class, find an old musician and then practice.

by study percussion i didn't mean: take a class or read this and that..

figure out how music is build up and how percussion is used in a song, just by concentrating on how it sounds you should get a certain idea.
and afterall, there are no real limitations in music, as long as it sounds good.

turn off timing correction and "trial & error"... rome wasn't build in a day

quantizize -> open window -> swing 55 -> quantizize later amount 6 -> there you go with the late shakers.

I know a lot of cats don't like this album but listen to RZA's use of percussion on the second Bobby Digital album, I swear thats recorded live. I'm gonna go that route of mic'ing up my kiddie percussion, see how that ish comes out

Ive heard some Little Brother tracks, and I really like that joint "Righteous"... The drums are really knockin, and there are some pretty basic but interesting chops. Vocal sample + raps on top of eachother, chorus that plays with the vocal samples... Really nice track. 9th is a good producer, but his stuff can get a little repetive.

i've turned off timing plenty of times. but i've never really done ALL my drums with it off. but i've made my little tamb. loops before. used 16 levels most of the time and they came out ok. but never got my shakers to sound like that...

you can also program what you want inside Fruity and rewire it to cubase, you don't have use it as a VST, then you can track what you did on the mpc.
