Here's my issue, hope someone can help. Say I want to attack a song like this. 4 bar loop, playing from mpc into protools repeatedly for whatever length of song. How can I know, with the audio in protools, play this song and adjust volume on tracks, panning and what not in a "live mode" so I can really add some human element? I'm not sure exactly what this is called, but I thought it was live automation.

its called automation...

once youve recorded the track/tracks hit the automation mode button(under the input/output buttons)> select write> hit play and adjust the parameters(levels, pan, etc.) as the track plays> press stop> automation written> hit play and watch all the moving faders dance(you can turn moving faders off to conserve cpu power)

check out chapter 27 in the pt reference guide(under the help tab) for more info on automation

also, after youve written the automation you can go to the edit screen and click on the track view selector(it defaults to waveform) and select volume, mute or pan and you'll see the automation info you just wrote, now you can get in there and edit the info and perfect it using the grabber tool, smart tool or pencil tool...
