Taking the Output Modification plunge.....

I'll take pics of the mod tonight and post them. I'll also record some drums so we can A/B the outputs before and after the mod.

for the money spent on sending your mpc to forat and having the modification done, you could buy yourself a nice compressor and a maximizer and call it a day. I don't see the use, nor think it's worth the money. There are other ways to make your 60 bang without using any outside gear or the output modification. Now if your doing it yourself like Mike Dean, then more props to you, you got a unique machine but I ain't shelling out $400 plus shipping there and back for that. You could get a vintage 160 for $50 dollars more and use it with all your gear.

The primary purpose of that modification is to preserve dynamics/volume without raising the s/n ratio.

A high quality pre-amp thats class A discrete would work even better then that mod. But then again, your talking about $1,000+ for a mono channel typically. Not the most cost effective solution. You could always do like Pete Rock and Co. Go to a top notch sutdio, track your instruments out on a Neve/SSL, cut to tape, get a CD master, and be on your way.

Thats what I was about to say. It doesn't cost anything to go to a studio and record stuff now. There are 5 majors were I live with SSL, Neve, Big Langley, and Ghost consoles, they've all got Studers and ProTools, and don't charge more than $15- 30 an hour (without engineer) depending on what your planning to do. Then you get the thickest drums possible, take them home, resample them, save the kits and call it a day.

Yeah this mod will boost the output but I would say that it is not worth it though. I like to just do things for the hell of it. I'm thinking about a liquid channel for my tracking.

I've heard bad things about that Liquid Channel

no wonder you can't get a demo of it without shelling out $20

Good job on your output boost Mike. To me it sounded like it might have taken a little off the high end but not much anyway.

Gearslutz...and those dudes would love it if it works. The biggest thing they said is that the preamps it's modeled after aren't named right, so like a 1073 type sound would just be a random number and the same for an api type preamp...so basically you have a ton of sounds but don't really no which is which so you spend a bunch of time scrolling through shit you have no idea what it will sound like with what mic...dunno if I made that clear but I hope so.

i think within the last moth they issued an update for it. i dont know if it cleans up any of these problems. im more concerned wiht the way it sounds tho.

I upped the feedback resistor to 220k and it is bangin at the midpoint on my mixer fader and trim pot.

yeah, if you have the time on your hands to try every one, or find the one you like, it's probably a good look. I see it as like a portable plug-in type module though and would rather one really dope neve style preamp with EQ
