The mk2's are newer. Less of a chance to have problems and usually in better quality. Although i have been seeing some clean mk1's going on ebay lately. Thats basically the only reason i want one. Otherwise they are almost identical. The mk1's have the tilt screen and look better. The mk2's have a headphone jack and fixed tilted screen. Both sound the same and have the same features.

the mk2 has a headphone jack in the front on the left and a plastic body. Also the screen on the mk2 is in a fixed position. the mk1 has a screen that can be tilted and a metal body, but no headphone jack.

Ive also noticed the mk1 buzzes slightly when you bang the pads due to the metal casing. Not sure if the mk2 does this...

When you bang the pad you dont hear the casing at all? I checked mine and everything is tight. I can just hear the casing a little.

notice the black tape that is around the edge of the metal casing. I never understood why it was there in the first place, and at first I thought that is how the mk1's where shipped from the factory (which they weren't). Maybe the previous owner had the same problem you did and solved it with the black tape.
