Swizz Beatz Type Synth Programming!

For those of u familiar wit swizz beatz' song back wen he was usin them horns in so many different ways. I was wondering if any1 had ne Tips on creating similar types of synth horns and brass sounds.

I am working with tha Fantom nd i hav not been able to get that thick, gritty type horns n brass sounds. Ne1 tips or sites with info wud GReat. Thnx

world war III- Ruff Ryders
Ruff Ryders Anthem- DMx

Down bottom - drag on & Juvenile
etc etc

oh word those sounds are mad nie. raw sounding. good luck. have you tried layering more than one at a time? just a thought. i wish i had a fantom. damn. peace

just turn the knobs and use the sounds you like.

I don't know exactly what Swizz does, but it helps to layer keyboard brass sounds with other sounds to make them sound fuller and more realistic, maybe piano, or string, or a synth sound or other horns, I just do that until it sounds right

what about as far as tweaking, ne tips on gettin that street sound?

I'm not sure about the songs you're talking about, but if you're looking for "grit" (a pretty subjective term, anyway) try this and see how it makes you feel:

1.) Transpose your whole horn line up one octave.

2.) Double the tempo.

3.) Sample just those horns (sounds great for strings, too) into the MPC. Make sure to sample the whole 1/2/4 bars phrase, not just individual notes.

4.) Tune them down until they line up with the song.

This gives you the pleasant nastiness of a pitched-down MPC sample, except that it's in the original key.

swizz beats was using a korg trinity back then so you may not be able to get the "exact" brass sound from a fantom.
but the fantom is a beast though, you have a powerful synth at your disposal the best advice anyone could give you is to just experiment. try layering your brass sounds with synth sounds.

what does transpose do and ho do u use it.

Most likely hes just using a nice preset and his patterns are good, maybe he layered another horn in there........the rest is just engineering his sound by adding character. If you take a basic preset, thicken it, then make it grimmy, you get charachter and a sound that doesnt sound so much like a preset.

there is no one way to get a sound to sound grimmy, the best thing to do is experiment, but here are some things to start learning about:

resample, layer, transposing layers, messing with velocity and panning of the layers, layering other shit than horns, apply effects, eq, run the sound through a tube, compression, sampling to tape, 12 bit, 8 bit, etc.
