no. not until you have to - or want to. but here's the thing - even the pads i thought were ok actually had loose graphite and now function a LOT BETTER...

how long it will last depends on the type of glue you used. mine probably won't last an incredibly long time - but then again i used elmer's glue.

however, i glued the hell out of em so i'd wager they'd last longer than the original gluejob did.

So the pad problem is the graphite then? so when u order the pads of vst, do you get the graphite and the rubber pad? but forget VST,im gonna name this "the ant solution"

the problem is the glue which attaches the graphite to the velocity sensor.

please forgive me if i'm anything other than coherent right now as i have imbibed of the alcoholic beverage.

i think the problem is in the molecular structure of the graphite itself. graphite goes into pencils because it comes away from its source in sheets - ie why you are able to write with a pencil. some kind of carbon bond, but who knows because i got a D in science.

so the glue that the mpc came shipped with took off 1 layer of the graphite and then the sheet which covers the pad sensor comes loose, resulting in a bad pad.

my solution is basically a better glue job - not really a mod, not really anything other than doing what AKAI should have done in the first place.
adding more glue to solve a problem.

my solution simply allows more surface area for the glue to cover. believe me, it takes a LOT OF WORK and a LOT OF PATIENCE. i suggest putting in a DVD of the chapelle show and just going to work on your bad pads. but believe me, the results are immensely satisfying.

"bad pads" ??!?!? no. just lazy mpc user. take some initiative and FIX YOUR DAMN PADS.

oh and sorry - when you order the pads, you should get pad, senser and graphite....but i don't know for sure because i haven't ordered em yet.

meanwhile my fixed up pads are BANGIN i would for sure play a show on em.

as for what was wrong with em before i fixed em, it was this: pads were unpredictable. certain ones would trigger every time but at inconsistant velocities, etc. MAJOR pain in the ass. i ended up just setting the mpc on FULL VELOCITY each time just to make sure it would actually trigger. mind you - i take my mpc everywhere. however, i have reason to believe that this is the problem others have been dealing with as well.

yo but this problem is completely mechanical, and INCREDIBLY easy to fix. henceforth i really dont wanna hear anyone bitching about mpc pads because man let me tell you - YOU CAN TAKE CARE OF IT....forget thermal grease, forget alll that....if graphite is your problem (as it was with me) all you need to do is glue it back into place...sturdy it up a lil bit and boom, brand new mpc.

now that the pad problem has been fixed, i have no issue saying that the mpc1000 is just as good IF NOT BETTER THAN ALL PREVIOUS MODELS.

yes yes, my friends, i am no longer looking into buying a 2000 or 2000xl BECAUSE I AMPED UP MY PADS MYSELF to the point where i'd most definitely rock a live show w/ me playing drums w/ full velocity OFF to emulate velocity sensitive pads.

can i just ask what size gap did you leave under the graphite square? was it about the thickness of a sheet of paper? if so, then i'd reccommend using some thin strips of paper under the sides of the square while you glue the corners, to make sure you don't glue it flat against the sensor, which would cause untold double triggereing!
