Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
Byfunkrhythm Mon Jan 05, 2004 11:28 pm
I have connected my Roland JV1080 Synth module, and my midi controller to the MPC2000XL. I am trying to step edit using the sounds from my Roland synth. I am able to get a midi signal through the MPC and I can here the sounds from the Roland synth, however when I record and playback a sequence it plays the sampled sounds that have been assigned to the MPC's drum pads, NOT the sounds from my Roland. Can anyone help me figure out how to record sounds directly from my roland to the MPC?

Thanks,
Abram

Hmmmmm, OOoooook. Here goes.

Is your synth in multimode? The way you describe events it appears that things are pretty normal. You say u get a signal when u press the keys on your midi keyboard ( For this to happen u must have selected a midi track on the MPC)

Anyway, what to do. On track 1 of the MPC for example, change drum 1 to MIDI. change OFF to 1A - Device 01. On your synth set the active midi channel to 1 (multimode) and press on your midi keyboard. Hear anything? Is it the sound it should be? ( midi channel 1) I hope so.

From here, your ready to record. To program in step, jus press F1/ Step from the main screen and do your thing.

For the life of me, I hope you have a mixer

Just a question is the tracktype in which you stepedit midi data for your synthmodule set to midi and not drum ?

Yes. All of the midi parameters are set appropriately. I hear the sounds from my synth when I play them into the step edit, but I don't hear anything during playback. This is the only apparent problem, albeit a significant one. I have connected everything the way the manual describes and everything else seems to be functioning properly. Could there be some parameter that I am overlooking in order to make midi playback possible?

Thanks,
Abram

And I had already done everything stated in BRAVO's original response to my question prior to my post. I still cannot hear the sounds that I programed from my synth when I try to play them back. I hear them fine when I just play normally in the main screen. I also hear them fine when I program them in step editing mode. The midi in signal is clearly being received, and the midi out signal is also being received. I have checked these over and over again. The only thing is that no sounds can be heard when I play back. I am an amateur here. What could I possibly be overlooking that is preventing me from hearing the sounds during playback. The actual sounds must not be recording properly.

O.k. To hear the sounds of your module you need to have a mixer to hear the module sounds. The MPC does not record audio other than thru sampling. Midi doesn't carry audio only data. So you're going to need a mixer or some means of getting your signal heard. What are you using to hear the MPC?

As for Kee do a search under midi exclusive. Or to do it even quicker look at all MPC 3000 Posts say first 100. It should pop up if not go back 200.

I have the MPC audio out into my four track which is connected to monitors. So far I have been perfectly successful using the audio sampling function. So what you're saying is that I need an external mixer hooked up to the MPC in order to record directly from my synth? Doesen't the MPC have an internal mixer that I could use. Please excuse my ignorance, I just started doing this stuff the other day reading the manual on my own so I am learning slowly. How exactly does a the mixer allow me to synch midi data with the MPC? All I want to do is record directly from my synth and retain all of the parameters of the sounds that I'm using. When I sample sounds from my synth through audio to the MPC I feel like I'm losing sound quality. Plus I don't have the advantage of ease of performance that I would have if I could just record directly.

Nope, unfortunately the mixer in the MPC is only going to acknowledge it's internal sounds/samples. So yes you are going to need some sort of mixer to run the MPC and your sound module thru. Then you run your mixers out into your recorders record in jack(s). As for your sampling issue before or after you sample one thing you could do is go into your mixer set up and turn your Master Level to 6 or 12 db. this is your MPC's internal amp so to speak. Another thing to do is when you are sampling to adjust your record gain. You may want to get it as close to 3pm as you can get it without sounding distorted. The louder you can set this without adding artifacts to your sample the better. Don't worry too much about it being too loud with practice you'll come up with a nice technique. Just remember you can always turn the sample 's volume down using the mixer function.
