So let's see, you have:

1) SP12 Turbo
2) S950
3) Zoom St224
4) ASR10

And you can't accomplish your beat
making ideas...

What exactly can't you achieve?

Allright I guess I have to explain :

I started with ASR-10, still love that piece but in my beatmaking process it somehow dictated the way I had to sequence and I didn't like that way...

(some beats I did with the ASR-10 only : www.soundclick.com/djessence)

Furthermore after I found out (that's been several years ago now) that it was the SP that had that sound that I felt most, I had to get one. It was a long way to finally obtain a SP. Since I couldn't afford a SP-1200 I bought a SP-12 Turbo and an S950. That way I thought, I could do my beats as I imagined.

Unfortunately this wasn't the case as I found out that the SP had limiting MIDI capabilities, meaning that I could only trigger One-Shot samples off the S950. So again limitation :(

Now, I'm confident that with the MPC60 I will finally get to my ultimate combo so that I can do the beats I always wanted !

yeah youre dissmissing your equipment too quik. good luck with wahtever you waste dough on next... i hope you dont sell that before you learn it. use your brain instead of your wallet.... if you took some time with the sp you can easily get around the one shot problem. stop buyin gear and learn your sh it son.

damn fine advice Dface. Learn your gear homie, it's got a lot of potential right there. But I can see where your coming from, we all know MPC's got that good timing/sequencing, but so does the SP. Keep working with what you got and save $800 over the next 6-12 months to get a full blown 60. Then you'll be set and have no more desires and complaints.

I see your point, however there is no "work around" on a One-Shot triggering except you mean the cut off trick by assigning two pads to the same output - I knew that - don't worry, I learn my machines.

It's not the same thing though as when I am able to press and release a pad and it starts stopping immediately and I can do it unintentionally you know.
Also the chopping and keygroup assigning on the S950 is quite a pain sometimes when you have ideas flowing but have to scroll around to achieve your thing. That's my opinion.

I guess I won't waste dough if I am able to do what I wanted.
I'll keep you updated.

Yo on the real I would have to say experiment with your some more. I use to have a mpc1k , and have since sold it. I use to use the 1k with my ASR 10, and as of now its all ASR. AS far sequencing goes. the mpcs are very to sequence in, but ASR is just as ill. Plus you got the sp, and s950.... I geus if ain't workin for ya. Then cop something else.. Yo I cjecked out your all ASR beats, They sounded real nice.... What as far the ASR is holdin you back????

So is your plan to replace the whole S950/SP combo with an MPC60?
OK, that would make some sense. Otherwise, you will always have
unused gear around (like me) which is a sorry state.

BTW do you have an ASR keyboard or rack?

By sp12_freak Tue Feb 07, 2006 8:22 pm
metafor : Thanks, I appreciate that. As stated before because of the sequencer but I could get used to it....problem is I like the SP sound too much, as well as its kind of sequencer which is just smooth as hell and sooo intuitive. The MPC's is alike AFAIK so..

tbiggz : Hehe, you probably won't believe it but it is also because of your (and MattmaNs) posts on Futureproducers & UGHH that I chose to get the Sampletrak.

But I don't mean to replace the whole combo, I would just sell the S950 and use the MPC60/SP12 combo.

I have the ASR-10 keyboard with 4MB RAM but without SCSI.

Well I hope the SampleTrak didn't let you down. I've
lent mine out right now but I like using that thing when
it's around.

As for you, since you have the ASR10 keyboard, you can get
by for now by sequencing drums on the SP, slaving the ASR
sequencer to the SP midi clock, and sequencing the S950
with the ASR. That way you don't end up with constant
hassles with one-shot mode. When you go to the MPC, you'll
have to change the way you work but you can dump the sequences
to the MP if you want to reenact your old work.

I really don't get it
you should be able to do everything you need with all the stuff you have...

remember guys like Diamond D back in the 90's doing ill beats with just 2 950s and HR16 as a sequencer

To be honest, it's not the 90's anymore. The equipment we're talking
about has depreciated very heavily so you can have much more gear
than anyone who produced back then. In the early 90's, that Diamond
combo would be worth about $3000. Right now you can have the same
gear for less than 1/3 that price. So it's not like people are
completely insane to pick up some of these units to experiment with.

That said, I do think a lot more productivity was squeezed out of
these boxes in earlier years. And the best producers on this board
don't seem to be surrounded by endless hordes of gear. So it just
depends how serious and hungry you are about the final result.

Me, for instance, I'm more of a hobbyist now (pushing 30).

tbiggz : Thanks for this information, I didn't thought about it. But I don't want to have 3 machines going and saving seq's on ASR & SP plus samples on the S950 !

Concerning the Sampletrak : not at all, I love this machine and I use it regularly. I would like to hear some beats you did with it, do you have a soundclick site or something ?
