OK, I think I'm gonna install a card reader in 2KXL...

Without looking at what you did it's hard to say what went wrong.
I think two things could have:
1. Loose connection. One of the cables is not thight or has been reversed. Make sure Pin1 on the drive and Pin1 on the board line up.
2. Make sure you got the power cables connected the right way. You ony need two (red/black) make sure you did not switch them and they go to the right spots on your drive.
3. Make sure you still have your bios loaded (it might somehow got ereased) Maybe you should temporarily install the floppy back and load the OS1.14 back again and then unplug everything and plug your new CF drive, etc. back.
4. Make sure you REALLY set the MASTER jumper right. Sometimes they say Jumper OFF and that's where the jumper should be set. Check the manual and the drawings and then double check again!!!. Oftentimes they set the jumpers to master/slave and you have to make sure that you not use this setting.
5. There is always a chance that the drive is defective. Put it into your computer temporarily and check if it would work there. If it does, then it should with AKAI, if it doesn't send it back.
6. Check the 40 pins on the drive side and the motherboard side connections!!! Maybe one of them got bent and it does not send the signal through making the AKAI think that it does not have a floppy or anything else attached to it. It's easy to do when you try to fit a ribbon connector and there is some friction there.

So many options, but I really think that there is somewhere a break in the dialogue between the drive and the Akai so it thinks nothing is connected and it wants to have at least a floppy connected to it.

it was the power connector! the one i originally threw in there had the red at #1 and black at #2. in the diagrams it had the red in #4 and the black in #3.

i got one from digitalera (it was at my house within 4 days including weekend) ... but I got some problems with SD cards.. everything is ok with CF but when I try to load/save something on SD the only thing I see on the display is "not ready!".

I have no idea why it would do that. It might be a defective unit, as the digital signals are sent the same way as CF info from your SD card. Everything is done inside the unit, I think, and then the stream of data is sent out. Have you tried a differend SD card. Maybe the card is defective?

hm - I think that card is ok cuz I`m using it with my nikon camera and everything is ok..

I`ll try to get ms or sm card (ms and sm uses the same slot) and then it will be clear what`s goin` on.

I think it was for the blue MPC2KXL's when they first shipped with the card reader. I got the old off grey 2KXL and put a Microtech SCSI card reader in it and it worked great with OS1.14, 1.14c and 1.2. SO I left OS1.2 in it.
No probs yet.

if i put the MCD drive in it...am i suppose to upgrade to version 1.20?
or is that ONLY STRICTLY for actual XL-MCD systems?

Man this is wack. Does anybody do a complete MCD kit with all the cables and leads and drive in one box with instructions? I've still got a floppy in mine and want to get the MCD to use it live because I don't think ZIP's will stand the test of time especially when being gigged.

I actually use a MPC60 and MPC 3000 but they're too valuable/fragile to be taken out! the 2KXL is/will be my performance tool....
