I have recently just tarted up my 1000 - putting the full ram in it and installing a 40gb hard drive - so now with no real restrictions as to space to save and load samples etc - I to have started using the 1000 as a completely stand alone unit - going over to the less tinkering, more fun side of things.

I swear to god - since I updated my 1000 and installed the new OS ( about two weeks ago) ive been more productve than I ever have!

Anyway, - back to the MPC........

Bud I did the same and got myself a 40 gig drive too and with the new OS things seem to bounce alone nice now. It did make the difference because the MPC feels much more complete don't you think? It's the little things like for example having FX and Mixer menus together to flick through making the whole process more fluid. 8)

my fav combo is to focus on the MPC with just one other synth.

eg. my dsi evolver. That's a sick combo, cause i can use the mpc to do the drums, then trigger melodies off the evo, sample them in and f** with them more and add more layers. i leave it on input thru and anytime i find a cool tweak or sound blip on the synth, the sample button is RIGHT THERE.

basically the mpc plus any synth can turn it into a super-synth.

Bud I heard those dsi evolver's are wicked. 8) Sounds a load of fun sampling in the sounds from one into the MPC then layering them.

mate I have one of those MFB-Synth Lite II's. Your dsi reminded me of it. I would say to peeps to check the Lite II's out also. Mad mash up sounds and are half the size of the 1K so portable also. They don't look like much but Christ on a bike do they rip your speakers up. It's a Moog+ in your pocket.

Check out this mad rig:

so how do yo use it on the go with a MPC or do you just sample right into it. I'm curious. I work on a ship often and this is something up my alley. I do have reason on a laptop but I prefer working with my MPC at times.

I've been spending more time with just the MPC by itself since the new OS, but taking the same approach as you and keeping it minimal with the Evolver and the SidStation for my experimental projects. Trying to squeeze too many synths together (all of different types of synthesis) can scatter things and take away from my focus on what I want to accomplish. I like alot of different styles of music, so it can get tricky focusing on one particular project when I have more ideas in my head than I can execute at any given time. Right now, I'm feeling the electro acid vibe, So I'm just gonna work the MPC with the MC-202 for a bit.

Puck, that MFB synth looks sweet. I gotta check out those tracks you posted btw.

Back to basics... keepin it minimal. 8)

Puck, those tracks sound tight. Definitely different from what I'm used to hearing, but that's always a good thing. 8)

the way i see it is this :

when i switched from making music with software in my computa (with trillions of soft synths) to make music with the mpc i finally understood why everybody is praising the MPC series, you make music with your ears not with your eyes. With software (reason, logic etc etc) you tend to focus on the wrong things, the nice interface the layout of things but forget why you are making music in the first place.

I've been making music for over 10 years now and when i bought the MPC1000 something clicked inside of me, it was that same feeling of joy and exitement that i got from working with my first sampler the ASR-10, 10 years ago!

I'll never switch back to making computer based music again, the MPC is the heart and soul of all the music i make now.

I think the MPC is completely capable as an all-in-one....

Things like reverb and master eq/compression come to mind. I do most of my tracks now on just the MPC, tho I just got my first hardware synth yesterday (Waldorf Micro-q) so that may change.

In my studio now, I keep the MPC on its own table with just the turntable and the speakers. ((although the Jupiter 8 is right next to it wink wink).

too bad it doesn't belong to me, the jup that is.

You mean the Lite II mate? if so I hook it up to my midi set-up but for you being on a ship you can just hook it up to your MPC and sample bits in :)

mate is the sid station cool? I always looked at them and liked the idea of the old C64 sounds. They don't make em anymore do they?

Yep I agree and also find when I start a track it can end up as something else. Style wise that is. Like you said keep it minimal. That goes for amount of gear you use in making a track.

Yeah check out the MFB synth and they do a Drum machine that has a load of the classics kits in it. Same price I think as the Lite II. I picked one up after I got a Lite II. Good fun stuff. You got the electro vibe at the mo mate? top stuff :)

Puck, those tracks sound tight. Definitely different from what I'm used to hearing, but that's always a good thing.

Cheers for the words mate :)

Djablo that is the vibe I get from the MPC also. I takes me back to the days when I didn't know about or even care about Midi. A bit made at times in the music making sense but back then it was all hands on and the little set-up I started with I had to trigger everything by hand. More abstract sounds back then but MPC has a sequencer so even though it takes me back it's more organized now. Cool stuff bud and I can see why you went the way you did with the MPC

Get an FX, comp rack etc bud and you will be steaming ahead with your added waldorf Micro-q. Like you my MPC is on another table away from my Rack with the other stuff. Oh and try to keep that Jupiter 8 ;)

MAn, I am totally feeling that.

I like this thread, we should just link to it for the newbies who come in with that 'mpc is pointless, just use mpd and fruity' type of mindset.

I was so suprised when I saw this topic. mainly becaus from now on the only way for me to make music is using the mpc as a standonle module.
My trustfull pc broke down 2day after some good years of delivering his work :(

I have the mpc 1k for about 2 months now and never really took it to its full use. When my pc broke down 2day I was like mmm mabey I should sell the MPC to get me a new PC since I use reason most of the time. But after seen this topic and all the reply's people have been giving. I'll give it a trye.

I know it will be a learning curve but I always loved the sound the mpc makes. That raw sample sound. proberlly good way to improve my musical skills.

If any of you guys could help me a bit on my way on how to start using the mpc as a standalone module please do so send me a PM
(like how should I get sounds in to my mpc now since I don't have a pc any more )

BTW for all smart asses around I'm using my GF PC at the moment :P

yeah great thread man!!!, my situations been a real mixed bag, I came from making beats on a PC using pro tools mostly with some additional programming in other programs.

I was always tryin to emulate an MPC style of production, so then I got an MPC1000 and its perfect, even standalone! In my first week owning the MPC I wrote heaps of beats with just the MPC1000 & only 10M or so on the CF card...its was great, a real challenge and the beats were good too which surprised me heaps since at home I had a full studio with drumkits, bass guitars, keyboards etc etc

I felt I got close to what I had been for years tryin to emulate with a PC BUT as you may have seen on here 2 pads on my MPC started to die so this made me return in part to the PC and instead of doin my basslines with the 16 level function and other tasks that are reliant on all pads functioning I started using Sonar and the MPC together…well its not too bad, no complaints really, I still just love the simple beats standalone more than my full intensive studio beats…ohh well

Heres a prime example of a full studio track

”New Day” by Miss Brown due for release soon

and heres just some “whatever” beats standalone on the MPC…they are a lil unfinished I guess you could say, but I love em

I think overall using it standalone tunes your ear and makes you work a lil harder on the beat...

getting back to the original question... i'm using my mpc as a workstation, stuffing it with all kinds of usable noise (mostly pc-edited samples of synths, pads, atmospheres, a few percussive sounds and weird loops made with my nord modular). usually two tracks in a sequence are midi - my doepfer ms 404 and yamaha tx81z are controlled in this way, so you can say i've said goodbye to software sequencing. so far i haven't experienced any midi lags or anything (vanishing notes and such) that could put me off using the mpc as the core element in my setup...

hope the info is of some interst to you.

this is a great thread!!

why? because its full of creativity, inspiration and positivity!

many times i feel people complaining more than being productive in this forum and why the heck did you buy the MPC in the first place? its nothing wrong in bringin up issues about bugs etc etc (thats very good), but if you would spend the same time and energy on making music instead of complaining maybe you would be surprised how much you would accomplish.

peace and keep up the positivity!!

and folks that complain can go and buy roland instead he he he....... no one forced you to buy the mpc no one is forcing you to continue using it if you find it so useless....

//make beats dont talk about making them
