Rolls, rolls, rolls

how do you guys get/make your rolls.
im a huge fan of them i thinkt hey sound dope in beats,
you guys sample from breaks? ive tried a few times and cant get them to sound real enough to use in a beat..i mean nice ones u can have a 3 hit roll sound aiight but u kno wutimean..

yeah, on the mpc4k it has grid edit. that helps alot cause you can see where you are placing hits, and its faster to step them in and out; to test and see if the pattern works.

On the other mpc's, its all about practice. Try using the note repeat. Also assigning the snare to 2 pads helps with timing because you can alternate the hits faster.

Id also try to step edit. Depending on the groove, you will use either 16ths or 32nds. I find that i really only use 32nds with hihats cause its harder to get the dynamics of a snare when they hit that fast-it ends up sounding more like a machine gun. but it all depends on the pattern and your samples. With 808 snares that machine gun sounds nice.

breaks are definately nice, however, sometimes its difficult to mathc the roll with other hits.

I Turn off Full level and I turn off quantise.

^^^good point. Sometimes quantize will **** you up; even if you are playing the roll good, it wont record good because of quantize. It all depends on how you programmin them drums.

I think it's a little easier with quantize on.Assign the same kick/snare(whatever) to two pads and use note repeat and 16ths(3) and alternate between the two pads.It does take practice though and you have to really decide what works best for you.

I turn quantise and full level off and tap one pad with a finger from each hand, or assign it to 2 pads.

If you want it to sound natural, start with mutiple snare samples from each hand - if you can, use both left and right hand hits with different velocities. If you quantize, layer your snares on two different tracks and quantize slightly differently for each track, then combine the two tracks into one and edit to taste...another great way to get a good roll is to sample a roll...borrow a snare drum and make 20-30 samples of rolls at different tempos, velocities, lengths etc. using a good mic. Vary the mic placement and do it again. In an hour you can create all the rolls you'll need for the rest of your life.....
