Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

I'm linking up my midi keyboard to my comp with a MIDI to USB cable and im using Reason. The down side is that when i hit a key on the midi keyboard it has a serious lag until the sound synthisized sound is generated....
Anyone know what i can do to fix this problem? I appreciate all the help...

That latency is down to your sample buffer. Try setting it to 256 or 512. However, it may be that your computer (and/or soundcard) can't handle such low settings.

cool, thanx. You think if i go from Midi to firewire, it would it improve latency at all?

if you are hearing latency from reason, the easy fix to that is, in reason, go to edit > preferences > audio and adjust the buffer size.

make sure you have a module up with a patch loaded, then as you are adjusting the buffer to the left, press on the keyboard. keep adjusting until you start to hear static when you press a key. as soon as you start to hear the static, adjust the buffer 1 notch up. and there you have it, no more latency.

usb is fine with reason.

To re-iterate, it's not your midi input that is slow,
its a lag in the audio output path.

What soundcard do you have?
To get minimum lag you need one with 'ASIO drivers'.

Even with a cheap soundcard, you _might_ be able to download a free ASIO driver for it to speed up performance.

Firewire is faster (much) than USB

Firewire is much faster than USB1.1, but roughly equivilant to USB2. But that doesn't matter, as neither is going to affect his situation. Making sure Reason and the audio card drivers are tweaked correctly will help.
