Flash Card VS Cd/DVD speed for Xfers

Sup yall, new to the forum and about to be a newbie MPC user. Have used SK-5,Mirage,S-550,ASR-10,SP 1200,software, etc since 1988. Finally making the switch now that the 2500 has me drooling (And, in memory of my man Dilla).

My question is this, I want to get a 2500 that's maxed with the hard and CDR/DVD drives. What's the speed difference of sending a few gigs of sounds via Flash from computer, compared to the same amount or more from a sound CD/DVD?? Any info is appreciated! I know I need the CDR drive regardless, especially when the new OS is out. Just making sure that I need it right off the bat. I have a lotta sounds I wanna xfer and I like speedy xfers if poss so I can get crackin on the beats!!

Especially since I saw someone post that we will soon be able to backup up to 20 gigs on one (Blue Ray?) DVD? Thats incredible. Thanx homiez...

What's up man. It's Mike Naughty. Welcome to the forums. The 2500 is nice but we are all waiting for the new operating system updates as well. It works but it has it's quirks. I put a 100GB hard in mine but I'm thinking it's a bit overkill. I would recommend going with an approved HD which I believe the biggest is 80GB in order to minimize bug possibilities. I feel this is the best bet for speed depending how you set it up. A compact flash card is the next best thing but it only takes 2GB max (for now).
No experience with the CD Drive yet because it's still kinda buggy for my taste. The USB slave option is slow but useful. (It takes a while for my Mac to find it)
You will run into bugs if you have Version 1.00B...so be prepared cuz it will annoy the hell out of you.
The 2500 is a great MPC for anyone especially a first time owner, but if I would have done it all over again, I would have gone with the MPC4000 for a little more cash...More of a learning curve but at least most of the kinks have been worked out.

First..the MPC 2500 can only load 128 MB max. So it its no real issue about what it faster...flash card, HD, or CDM25.

The HD is the first thing I would get and even the CDM25. The CDM25 does have issues with editing samples that were loaded with it though.

when i brought mine, i just maxed the memory out, and put a 60 gig harddrive in.. i thought the cd/dvd rom could wait.. i started out using reason and all my files were on my 120gig external harddrive.. a 60 gig is perfect, not to much not to little especially when you can backup on the pc.. for instance ive got all the motif es sounds(4.5gigs), triton extreme (2gigs), battery2 (4gigs), banging beats willymanmonth kit, ect.... plus my own sample libary, with plenty of room to spair. and its not half the space.. as for the cd/dvd wait and save money.. akai wants $150 for memory, a high price for a harddrive that they test, and $200 dollars for a cd/dvd rom... everything in this machine is from a laptop, i bought my memory for $60 (pny) from compUSA.. i bought my hd for $94 (seagate) from bestbuy on a hookup... im just waiting on the specs of the cd/dvd rom so i can buy a third party in that.. as for buggs thats gonna happen whith anything, cant do much about that. just gotta wait for the updates. i know i probly rambled off but this is my first MPC also, plus ive been drinking :lol:

Good luck waiting on the specs for the CD Drive....Akai did the same thing that Korg did with the Triton Studio. Standard CD drives will not work properly and will cause the units to malfunction.

Kool, this board is the ISH! I see why Akai is king, so many active users. And big up Jahrome, I've been absorbing your knowledge and debates on this machine for days now. I appreciate the info. I guess what I was really asking is, if I wanted to copy massive gigs at a time (maybe 10 to 20) from a DVD rom to the internal HD, is this possible? I forgot the Flash thing is 2gb max so lets 4get about that part. I didn't mean loading times for soundz...Thx!

It would be best to move samples from your PC via USB to the MPCs HD.

If you used the CDM25, you will have to load 128 MB max at a time into the 2500s RAM and then save these files to the HD.

Using a computer, you can just drag and drop files from your PCs CD/DVD drive directly to the MPCs HD.

A-HA!! That's the info I needed! You're the man. I can't really see a need for the cd drive then because I can load Akai sound disks on my Mac and send em over. Thanks a lot. I found someone local selling it for $1400, I'm excited as hell.

I had a triton classic, I went str8 to the extreme.
I skipped the studio for that EXACT reason.

I LOVE my triton.

At first I thought the classic was going to absolutely KILL my asr10.
Newer technology, slicker interface, blah. I hated it and despised it.
I hardly EVER used it after I got used to it.

I was wrong.

Extreme on the other hand is a welcome addition into my home.
I love it like a brother. Now all I need is a MOSS board.

Jahrome, one last question. Would it be the same for the reverse situation - When the OS comes out, do U think we'll be able to burn a full DATA CDR (700 MB) of beats at a time (from internal HD). Thanx dawgie.

Whaddup Ram! Lookin forward to meeting U...I got rid of the S-550 years ago along with the OS, sorry...

I can't confirm anything...but Sparq (I believe) stated that the burning features will come with the next (long overdue) OS.
