fixing pads the budget ass way!

so here's my dilemma.

i have two pads where the graphite squares were completely ripped and dead. i have an mpd-16 which works way better, but internal 1000 features like 16 levels (among other things) could not be used by an external midi controller like the mpd-16. so if you have dead pads you are missing out on certain functions.

first off i have no money, and second i dont want to spend more money on faulty pads when i already have an mpd-16. so i resorted to this method. try at your own risk cause i'm sure there's plenty of ways to make matters worse trying this.

so after reading someone's post (maybe antonym? i dont know i remember someone mentioned it on here awhile ago) about using tinfoil instead of the graphite i decided to give it a shot.

of course there was no tin foil to be found anywhere in my depressing ass kitchen. however, when i opened my pack of cigarettes there right in front of me was two decent sized pieces of foil.



ripped them out, folded them up and put them in my pads where the graphite used to be.




true it works at almost ALWAYS full level (messing with the sensity and curve i got it down to 111 velocity once in awhile instead of always at 127). not the greatest solution but now i can at least use 16 levels again.

and i spent no money.

just thought i'd share for those who are in a bind and just want they're pads back in somewhat "working" condition.

this is definitely sketchy, and having the tinfoil slide over at first caused my 1000 screen to blank and i guess short out. i lost my mind for a second. but everything seems fine now.

basically try this stupidity at your own risk.

those are just about the grimiest pads i have ever seen on an mpc.

haha. i wish i could take credit for all the grime but that happened the one day i tried using that thermal grease crap. everything i touched just had this filthy residue after that sht. never again.

i think the thermal grease is what actually completely killed the graphite from working in my pads. i still have the pieces but no matter what, i could only get them to trigger a pad hit every 50 times or so.

when i threw the budget ass cigarette tinfoil in it worked almost everytime. ehh....


(and to be honest, i am pretty filthy. i'd just rather take credit when i've actually accomplished it without the aid of foreign chemicals or solvents.)

yo punch, the cigarette foil reminded me of some oldskool sh!t i used to do back in the day when i had no bowl screens left and no aluminum foil around to make a home made screen.

same here. i cut down alot since the summer so i can catch up on alot of reading. now i only puff like once a month, but i dont have to read sh!t like 5 times in order to comprehend it.

voluntary. i'm trying to get my head right for school. which means that i don't smoke as much. plus i've got a girlfriend, plus i've severed all the ties with the people i smoke with because they were holding me back and i was having to clean up their messes.

haha those pads are definently grimey. i've just got my mpc and i was wondering if the pads start to get dirty. just gotta remember no thermal grease on the pads.

p.s. if you're a heavy potsmoker, your creativity will be devastated the first few weeks you stop but after that you learn how to gain inspiration more from experiences. i chose to quit and find a girl that doesn't smoke to keep my head straight and it worked like a charm. unfortunately i drink like a fish on the weekends.

i would keep it unplugged until it was time to see if the pad was triggering. i had to have it on to make sure that the sensor was actually registering hits.

but yeah, i was probalbly a minute or two away from frying me or my 1000. at least it works now though...
