What would be the best way for ME to do a snare/drum roll?

a realistic one.......like you hear in most southern tracks and using note repeat doesnt quite cut it........but heres the catch,i'm working with only one hand.........i searched the board with a few different inquiries with no luck so the only way i can find the best option is to ask.......please help

sorta,i have a muscle disorder and it affects different muscles randomly so my left hand is totally functional while my right hand is retracted like .........carpal tunnel...so i can't straighten my fingers and my wrist has no strength at all


that had alot to do with my switching to the 4000 as fuctions such as note repeat have the latch fuction so i can just push note repeat instead of holding it,but these drum rolls are giving me a little trouble

Sample some dope ones from Jazz records. Or get familiar with Step Edit. I recommend Lots of alternating velocities and different snare hits

i assume the 4k would have a function to overdub a recorded beat with additional real-time slider information? (the 1k has that)

how bout, slow your tempo way down, go into overdub and make a few passes with the sliders, use em to change tuning/filter/level by small amounts from hit to hit.

I'm glad you didn't see that as me dissing you cause I really wasn't dissing you . I was joking, but I wanted to ask at the end cause I know people that have disorders and handicaps also and I didn't wanna seem insensitive at all.

I would say jacpot and sleepersriddle got the best ideas if you are attempting to create your OWN drums rolls.

If you wanna jsut get pre-mades then I'd say sample or get one of your homeboys/homegirls to create a drum roll for you.

some keyboards and modules have various drum rolls in them also.

It's been said before (by me and others) but for a realistic roll that is almost indistinguishable from the real thing you need to start with the right samples. You neen several right and left hand hits at different velocites. No need to worry about only having one hand to work with because you're gonna let the machine do the work. The easiest way would be to to step program your different snare hits (all right hand hits) in say, 1/16 note increments on a single track. Move to the next track and do the same thing using 1/32 notes starting on the "and" or offbeat. Try some different swing settings, anywhere from 52 - 56 varying the setting for each of the two tracks. You can also use the track offset feature and set a small offset for each track, one early, and one late. Or if you want to be behind the beat a bit, one late by an increment of 1 or 2 and the other track late by a higher increment. This will add a "natural" feel to your rolls. Another option is to sample a real snare drum doing a roll. Have your player lay down a dozen rolls at different tempos and lengths using every mic in your locker. Reposition your mics and do it again. That should give you all the snare rolls you'll ever need. I have bands in my studio frequently and as the drummer is warming up and we are doing mic checks, I'll have him do a few rolls and I will record them. Over the years I have ammassed a huge collection of drum kits / hits/ and rolls that are exclusive to our studio.....

you can also slow the tempo way down and play the roll(using the above method of different samples) with one hand and speed the tempo back up after...
