Hey,

I have Windows 98 on my PC. When I connect the MPC to it using the USB, my PC does recognize the MPC as a new device but can't find the driver needed to make things work. I'm not a computer whiz here... Are the drivers installed automatically when you install Windows? So Windows 98 doesn't have the right drivers to make the MPC1000's USB work with my PC? Should I install Windows XP to solve this problem? Thanks very much.

I have XP on my laptop but could not get it to work, so I pulled out the old 98ME box and surprise! it works now.
I can move files back and forth with it all day and night.
on the XP laptop it tells me to format the disk, when I try to format the disk XP says it is unable to. hmmmm?!?!?

don't know. This would be a great sticky post so we can keep an eye on what's up with all the USB bugs.

Did you try formatting the CF card from the 1000? When I first connected it to my Mac (running OS X) it kept trying to format the 'unknown mass storage device' as well. I reformatted the card on the 1000 (hit MODE and pad 2 (load) or pad 3 (save), then hit F3) and connected it to my computer again to have the 1000 appear on the desktop. Be warned that you'll lose whatever is on the card already.

Yea, that what I did but even after the mpc format the XP box wasnt feeling it.
I may need to run MS update for better USB support on the XP box.

Not true because mine works great on my win98ME box and not on my XP laptop.

the only difference between the 2 is one just got windows update and the other did not.

Win98 had USB support going back to the first edition, so there's no reason why it shouldn't work with the 1000 once a driver for USB mass storage devices has been installed (when you connect the 1000 to a computer it basically becomes an expensive CF card reader). It's possible that the only reason Akai aren't officially supporting Win98 is because they didn't develop / provide a driver for it.

cowdude: if running Windows update or DLing the most recent service pack doesn't help, this might work. Better than giving Bill Gates more money for XP...

I'm not 100% on this, but I think ME might have been the first MS release to have drivers that support USB mass storage built in.

Maybe try a service pack(s) or second edition Win98..
