Does anyone here do hip-hop production on the 2500? How do you like the sound? I've been chatting and I heard the sound is computery and not the best for hip-hop, is there any truth behind this statement?

my self and most people here do hip hop on the 2500. i havn't had it more that 3 weeks but from what i've done i like the sound. the quantize does sound stiff as fvck, but i just started programing in double time so that helps the problem alot. i'm sure some more experienced users can drop some more info on the stiff issue though.

true i was gonna say swing, but since i dont know that much about it being that i have not had the machine for even a month, i figured i would let somebody else bring that up.

oh word... yeah swing is your good friend... i don't have a 2500, i still have my XL.. but with swing, you set it anywhere from 50% to 75% i believe.. 50% being super stiff, 75% (or whatever's the highest) being super loose... i usually rock it at 66% with timing at 1/16... or with no quantization.

and in reply to the person who started this thread...
from what i hear, the 2500 is the same sound as the mpc2k/1k, etc etc... to me, 16bit is 16bit. 16 bit works fine for hip-hop (for anything)..
i mean, if you're lookin for somethin a little grimier, then you'd go with an emax rack or a sp1200 (12 bit sound).. but really, it's not about the machine.. it's what you put into it.

yo if you dont mind, could you explaining this to me

how do you apply different swing to each track, like i tried stting my snare to 65 and my kick to 50, and when i went to t.c menu it said 50 on all the tracks. when i pick a new swing does it overwite all the other swing settings i set to the current one or does it just say the last value i set untill i change it again.
hope that made since,

Thank you. I appreciate the quick reponse. Does anyone find the 100,000 note capactity to be to little? My other option is the 4000, but since I want to do my sample chops on the PC, I think it's overkill...no? :D

hermit - yeah i know what you mean...
i'm pretty sure you're doing it right. keep in mind, the only time i used swing is on my 16th notes really... you know, like when you have a kick go "ba-boom-boom" the "ba" part is the part that should swing... the "boom boom" is 1/8th notes.. i never put swing on my 8th notes.
anyways, when i apply swing to different tracks, it does just that.. it doesn't overwrite swing on the other tracks..
when you're checking the swing on a track and it doesn't have what you entered before, maybe what it displays is actually NOT what the swing on that particular track... maybe it's displaying the swing that you last applied to a track.. in that case, you would probably have to change the swing everytime you want to add something to a certain track.
instead of reapplying the swing to the same track, i usually go to an unused track, apply the swing setting, then go back to the track i want to add to with that swing setting... i do it this way, because if you apply 1/16 TC with 66% swing to a track, and that track already has a snare roll that was applied at 1/32(3), it'll **** up that snare roll and just make it a 16th note or something.
does this make sense? it's confusing myself, haha.. but like i said, i just leave all my tracks on 1/16 time correction with 66% swing.. then when i want to add a snare roll or something, i turn it the time correction to 1/32(3), play the sequence, hold down "note repeat" and hit the snare pad when i want my snare roll in there...
also, just a heads up.. any time correction you see with a (3) means it's a triplet, and you can't change the swing, cause a triplet is its own kinda swing. example: 1/16(3) ,1/8(3), 1/32(3), etc. etc...

lemme know if this helps, or if you want me to elaborate on something better.

in-dent - i've never had any problems with the note capacity being too little, but that's probably cause i just work with samples.. for cats that are running like 7 keyboard and 4 racks at once, the 100,000 note capacity might be a problem ;)
my friend has the 4000, he likes it... there's a lot of shit he don't use, but some people might find that stuff useful.
my friend also chops his samples on the computer... the 4000 and the computer work well together.
me, i'd rather get the 2500.. i guess because it comes with 8 outputs and effects standard, plus it's cheaper... it has what i need, and it looks really dope.. (the black/red colors are effing gangster)

Have you even ran out of note capacity?

You can do chop on whatever machine
you have or the pc, it doesn't matter.

The sound is whatever you make it. It's nothing to worry about.

Just turn of the quantize when you record and learn how to play the pads, makes a world of difference.
