Still having issues

Hey guys, sorry I am being such a tool, but I still can not get this going. I have...

MPC1000
Fantom-S
Logic
M-audio Quattro (sound card)
M-audio keystation49 USB keyboard

I have the Fantom-S working perfectly. I have Logic connected as a sound module through the M-audio quattro. I want to use the keystation as a midi controller, connected through USB. However, whenever I try, the MPC is not picking up the midi signals. However, if I change a setting to the instrument port of the Quattro, it holds the note and makes abnoxious noises. Any help? thanks!

yo, be more specific about what cord comes out of the keystation and goes to what? and what comes in to the MPC and from what?

a USB cord connects the Keystation to my powerbook (logic). Then my Quattro is also connected by a USB cable. I have midi-in of the quattro to midi-out of the mpc, and midi-out of the quattro to the midi-in of the mpc. I also have midi cables hooked up in the same fashion between my fantom and my mpc.

I don't use logic so i hope someone else will jump in with more help.. but might as well try...

Now these instructions assume your wording was correct, ie you are trying to use the keyboard to trigger sounds to play on your mpc. If not, pls correct me...

how bout, first unplug all midi connections except for the usb cord and the midi cable FROM THE QUATTRO OUT to the MPC IN. cause that's the one relevant to what you want.

Now, I would break the problem into 3 phases::
1. make sure midi is getting IN to logic from the keystation (thru the usb connection.) A way to check:: can you record midi notes to a midi track in logic? Can you see the notes appearing?

2. Next step, take a midi track in logic and set it up to send OUT THE CORRECT QUATTRO PORT TO THE MPC. make sure notes are in the track, then rewind and play... is the mpc receiving the notes?

3. If 1 and 2 both work, the final step is some setting in Logic to enable 'software midi thru' from the KEYSTATION MIDI PORT IN thru to the QUATTRO MIDI PORT OUT. (the one that goes to mpc). Again, don't know logic so cant tell u how.

<<also check in the mpc's midi settings! on the MIDI settings menu. Also, in the MPC, make sure a valid program is selected with sounds mapped to all of the pads>>

I can use this keyboard to control audio sounds on the MPC... but I cant use this keyboard/logic as a sound module with the MPC. I did everything you said and no luck. However i do hear a really messed up sound that doesnt turn off until i turn midi off if that helps... i think if that gets fixed then this will all work... but i have no idea what that sound is... thanks

1. The idea of trying everything I said was to break it down and see which steps worked/didn't work. what was the result from each step? otherwise we cannot progress.

2. Before you said 'the mpc is not picking up MIDI signals'.
Now you said 'i can use this keyboard to control audio sounds on the mpc'. That seems contradictory. If the mpc is 'being controlled', then the mpc is indeed 'picking up MIDI signals', right? so my advice may have been irrelevant. I think you are confused about the direction that midi signals flow.

So, I think I'm still confused about what you are trying to do, but I'm still trying... you said you want to 'use logic/keystation as a sound module'. So this time I will guess that you want to -hit a pad on the mpc and -have logic play audio from a software instrument in response.

Is that right?

I suggest you search this forum or google for some basic midi tutorials, also, to make sure your concept of midi is solid.

for what it's worth, that sounds like you may be getting a midi feedback loop.

i don't really know logic either, but you probably need need to set up your midi thru in logic to off or something like that.

if you are using the USB cord from the keystation as the midi transmition from the keystation, this is your problem.
The usb bus creates an internal midi bus in software on your computer the best way to route these audio signals is to use a program such as midi ox or any other software midi signal router to send the USB created keystation midi messages to your MPC. you can also do this in nuendo/cubase or the like by setting a blank midi track to get input from the keystation and route that input to the output of the quattro which is running into your mpc1000.
If you want to use a VST as a sound module for the MPC plug the midi out from the 1k into the midi in from the quattro and the pads will control the vst. Or if you want the keystation to control the vst just set the vst to accept messages from the keystation usb bus.
If i were at home i could make a diagram, but tell me if this explains it at all?

Logic is accepting midi info from the keystation via USB. i can make music in Logic with this keystation. I can control and record (aafter about 2 beats for some reason...) sounds from logic with the midi pads. However, I can not do this w/ the keystation. Or, I get this midi-feedback loop that I can not figure out how to stop. I do not know what VST means, however, i believe the last thing that Oderus is saying is true, but as the MPC1000 as the master. Is this making sense? i'm terrible at explaining things. So I cant figure out what setting needs to be changed to stop the noise, or get the mpc to record, and anyone know why it takes a second to record?
