Good luck with your MPC. Be sure to upgrade to the latest OS for all the added features. From what I've read, Tutor is working on a tutorial for the 1000 which should be available soon. Until then, just read up as much as you can on this forum and use the search function to avoid asking questions that have been posted already.

Print the new manual or save thae file and have it printed at Kinko's.
Also, read the "sticky" topics about RAM, CF cards, hard drives at the top of the forum as well as downloading Sparq's videos.
As far a how I use my MPC in my setup, I use it as my main sequencer/sampler, and I sequence all my MIDI hardware and software with it.
