Vocoding.... Has anyone done it succesfully

There are lots of vocoders out there, we all heard the Troutman sound back in the day. I realy wanna master this technique, messing with vocals through a vocoder and playing it with a keyboard. My question to u guys is this.

1.) Have u done it, and what did u use.
2.) Were u happy with the results?
3.) If so, how did u do it?

All I know for sure right now is the vocals got to be monotone, so u can mess with it on the keybord over a scale. I tried it with Reason, but I wasn't very happy with the sound.

What were your experiences?

I got the one in Reason 2.5 working really well at one time. It has several different modes, so if u didn't like the sound i suggest to explore it a bit more...

When u first are trying to make it work, remember to use a carrier tone (ie. the non-voice sound) that is rich in many frequencies from low to high. Don't use like a drum beat, instead use a synth sound like a big bright loud pad sound.

For the modulator (ie. the sound that is often a voice), use a sound that has a lot of dynamics and frequency changes. Like a voice sample with really exaggerated tones.

I also tried a VST called Orange Vocoder using Ableton Live as the host. That was harder to set up because I had to put in in an 'Aux Send' channel, then pan a sound hard left or right and send it to the aux channel. If I remember right. That one sounded good also but not as flexible as Reason I think.

I've done it with the MS2000BR and was very pleased with the results. To me, it was really about working to get the right settings and voice/synth balance. I did it long ago with my RFX2000, but the results were mediocre at best, though I did find uses for it (hey, it was the only vocoding I had so I made it work).

i use an indigo. scroll through some presets and hop vocodor preset!
sounds decent. the one in reason is quite good i think.. you have to use a big fat dual sawtooth as the carrier. preferably the one from the malstrom. if you want i make a combinator preset! do you have reason 3? reason 3 sounds f-a-t by the way

Yeah, I started to say something about talk boxes, but it's the exact same concept and similar sound, so it's really splitting straws. Teddy used both, and you'd be hard pressed to point out which was which. I think vocoders are not only more practical (who wants to stick a nasty tube in their mouth), but also vocoders are more readily available for not a lot of cash outlay, if any, though you can get a new talk box for around $150.

I disagree...

i've only played with a talkbox but own an Alesis Vocoder and IMO the talkbox gives a lot more attack and response. Maybe it's the quality of the vocoder that I'm using but the talkbox felt like i was actually interacting with it instead of humming a straight bar and playing keys.

Yeah if you could make a combinator preset for reason 3 that would be great. I am looking for a nice fat sound, but vocoding is not my forte.... at least not yet...

So in some of Dilla tracks, and even some MFDOOM sh!t with MadVillan....
They throw a Robotic sounding drop in.....sounded like a Tracea thing where people with Marlboro throats have to talk through..
What did they use? Vocoder? or that throat thing.

if you get your hands on a DP4 there's a vocoder setting in it that is pretty good... i use to use that all the time....
