Does compression help the quality of the loop?

only if the loop needs compression.

Use compression when you hear the loud points of the loop too much and want to bring out the rest of the loop instead.

Or use it to make the drums sound louder/punchier, but you have to experiment.

i only compress in the mpc in dire circumstances. otherwise, i leave that for later - when tracking out your beats. i suggest you do the same, if you plan to go that far into production.

mpc compression, honestly, is residual from a time when people did more strictly inside the mpc.

directx plugins, and more so--protools--changed all of that.

i use the compression on the main outputs only and usually during live play almost to act as a limiter before it hits my board. I think the compression was meant ( as said before ) as a way to keep all the work inside the box and a at faster workflow there are much better compressors and vst plug ins for it now. The main reason i dont like it is the lack of editing for it. I like to be able to set more than a threshold and a make up gain.
