Gathering Sounds from the Internet?

Are the quality of the "free" sounds on the net as good as the expensive ones? Most of the sounds that I have gotten off of the net are mp3's and I can play them on my computer and they sound good but what about once I convert them to wav files?Also what programs are proving and easy to use to convert wav files to mp3's and vice versa? I am wanting to use all of these sounds that I have in my computer on my mpc2000xl. Also does the mpc2000xl actually read wav files(meaning will it play them as actual sounds)? I have been on some "pay for sounds" sites and they all say that their sounds come in "MPC2000/2000xl,MPC60/60II,MPC4000" format and also wav format. Is there any diffrence between the two? I have read the manual on this subject but without having a way to try it(All of my Free sounds are mp3's) I really don't know.Prior to me downloading samples all of my sounds came from records and cd's but the process of editing samples in the mpc is a long one.I am basically trying to amass a huge collection of sounds on my computer that I can then convert to whatever format my MPC2000xl will read and then use The MPC Editor to make programs that I can use in my MPC.Sorry for the long winded post but I have so many samples that I want to use that I can't because I don't know how to make it all work.

i use winamp to convert mp3 to .wav. you shouldnt lose any sound quality.

Just remember that by converting a WAV to mp3, you lose sound quality permanently. By converting the MP3 back to WAV, you cant regain any of the original sound quality - the WAV will sound the same as the MP3 (which is rarely a good thing). MP3 quality is poor - this is why the sounds are free.

I use Awave 7.3 to convert, sf2, efe, sbk and others to wav and load into my MPC. Awave can also convert to MPC series SND.

I seem to find more soundfonts than anything.

Internet sounds aren't "guaranteed" good quality if that's what your wondering.. My belief (self induced) is that the sounds you aquire are only as good as the equipment and/or source it came from..

I am probably going to end up just buying samples that are already in the proper format from reputable sights.I would buy the MPC tutor sounds but they don't seem to have any sort of "preview" so I am not going to take somebody's word that they are great sounds. Not to be an ass or anything but that would be like buying a car without test driving it first...Thus the appeal of the free samples because all of the ones I have come across have a way to listen to them before you download them.So at least I know what the sound actually sounds like.

There are demo sounds you can D/L. Have you been around the site...More so the sample section??

Yep, we actually spent approximately a month producing the demos for the site - every single sample pack comes with an mp3 demo song that uses some of the samples from the pack in question, plus on most of the packs we also give away an actual sample from the pack.
