SCARY hard drive issue

hey - KEEP YOUR NUMBER OF FOLDERS in your SONGS folder down in your hd!

i tried to create a new folder in my hd under folder: "SONGS." i already had a LOT of folders in there of old songs, and my mpc froze on the creation of the new folder.

unfortunately i had deleted the sond previously before saving, so the only existing copy ofit was in my ram when the mpc froze.

this problem was replicated again and again until i deleted some folders.

so PLEASE keep your number of folders down! if you have a "SONGS" folder, make an "OLD SONGS" folder for finished songs or songs you probably won't work on anymore!"

public service announcement- be careful! don't know if this is a bug or just an issue with my mpc/hd - it could be a fluke - but nevertheless, better safe than sorry.

luckily the song i lost really sucked anyway, i was making it for local rappers. haha **** em...they can skeet skeet over someone else's beats beats

when i save a song i create a new folder in "songs" and title it, then save my entire memory into it. when i want to load it, i simply hilight the folder and hit load.

Thanks for the heads-up; when you say you had a lot of folders, roughly how many are we talking?
I've only just got my HD and am still in the process of organising my files. I guess I might have to get round this by having SongsA-D, E-H, etc.

i most probably had close to20, but i'm NOT sure, so i'm going to say 10 just to be safe, and safe is good.

what a terrifying bug! if i had been working on one of my more epic songs, i could hve lost days worth of work...and not even must the seqs and shit, we're talking all the samples....

some of you may recall, something similar happening with the CF cards before the hard drive became available. i guess we just can't have too many subfolders. we just have to spread the luv in the folder area.

never happened to me w/ cf cards, but i'm not bitching. it's no hassle whatsoever, and will keep me organized.

what's weird is that this isn't the case w/ smaller folders - ie my drumsets...you all know how many drumsets i have and use...and they're ALL in one folder.

strange business.

Hmm, thats not good cause I have my Songs Folder and in that Folder is a Folder for each Song. You telling me that I cant do this no more? And how many folders can I have?

what kinda HD is most recomended in use with the 1000? easy to install?

Since I got the HD installed, I setup a Songs folder structure like this:

Root
--Songs
----Song1
------01
--------{Save all memory goes here}
------02
--------{Save all memory goes here}
------etc..
----Song2
------01
--------{Save all memory goes here}
------etc..

I save the entire memory to a new folder everytime I make a substantial change (01, 02, etc...). This way, if it crashes, I still have my previous versions saved. I started saving this way when I got Directory Write errors when trying to overwrite previously saved files. Most of my music is MIDI anyway so I'm not worried about wasting space. The redundancy actually gives me a piece of mind. Plus with 40GB, who cares?
